In Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones, George Lucas redeems himself in a big way. The special effects are mind-boggling, there is actually a decent story and the movie makes you look forward to the next one. It also proves that even long ago and far away, women dug bad boys.
Against the backdrop of more important plot lines, like the imminent destruction of The Republic, Episode II traces the genesis of the romance between Jedi knight-in-training Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) and Princess Amidala (Natalie Portman), who is now a senator. When Amidala’s life is in danger, Anakin is called upon to take her back to her native planet. Although he confesses his undying love for her, it is not until Anakin flirts with the dark side that Amidala lets him in. Then she’s all over him like hair on a wookie. Oh well.
Although the movie is a little long in parts, it has all the trademarks of what makes the series so successful. I have only one real issue with Lucas. It is fun to see Yoda finally bust a move with the light saber, but unfortunately, you can’t shake the image of essentially watching a Muppet. It is unintentionally funny.
