A group of males in a car opened fire at 19th and Carpenter streets Monday morning, killing a 23-year-old man on a bicycle and wounding a bystander who was taking out the trash, said police.
Ethan Brown, of the 1700 block of Catharine Street, was pronounced dead at the scene around 9:45 a.m., said Capt. Thomas Lippo of the Homicide Unit.
The other victim, shot in the foot, was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Lippo said.
The shooters drove up to Brown and opened fire before speeding off in a 1998 blue Oldsmobile, the captain said. A short time later, the gunmen returned to the scene and ditched the car, added Lippo.
Homicide detectives were trying to determine why the men returned to the intersection after fatally wounding their apparent target.
Police recovered almost two dozen 9 mm and .40-caliber shell casings, as well as a small-caliber gun next to Brown’s body, said Lippo.

Gunned down at deli
A man was shot and killed around 9 p.m. Monday inside Sonny’s Deli at 1655 S. Chadwick St., said police.
Maurice Bryant, 23, of the 1400 block of North 10th Street, was shot several times in the abdomen and pronounced dead at the scene, said Capt. Thomas Lippo of the Homicide Unit.
Police continue to search for the gunman and a motive.

Rape trial in progress
A Southwest man is on trial for charges of beating and raping a 39-year-old woman near the loading dock of St. Agnes Medical Center last November.
The woman, who lives in the neighborhood, was walking to work around 5 a.m. when she was allegedly accosted by Tramaine Hicks, 26, from the 6900 block of Woodland Avenue.
Armed with a gun, Hicks beat the victim, asked her if she wanted to die, then dragged her behind a Dumpster, where he sexually assaulted her, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Neighbors who heard the woman’s cries called 911.
Fourth District officers Martin Vinson and Dennis Zungolo arrived at the scene near 1901 S. 15th St. to find Hicks standing over the victim with her pants down, said Sgt. Roland Lee of the Public Affairs Unit.
When the officers told the suspect to show his hands, Hicks allegedly made a hasty move toward them and attempted to run, said Lee. Vinson opened fire, striking Hicks three times in the chest and torso area.
A .38-caliber handgun was found in Hicks’ pocket, allegedly with the victim’s blood on it, according to the prosecution.
Both Hicks and the victim were taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Hicks pleaded not guilty at the start of his trial last week. His attorney did not make an opening statement, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Hicks is charged with sexual assault, reckless endangerment, possessing an instrument of crime and other offenses.
Mischief Night shootings
Police responding to a report of gunshots in the area of 1100 Bigler St. last Wednesday night discovered eight vehicles riddled with bullet holes.
The incident occurred around 3:50 a.m., said Sgt. Steve Biello of South Detective Division.
South Detectives’ Special Investigation Unit recovered numerous 9 mm casings in the area, along with projectiles from inside one of the vehicles, Biello said.
Detectives continue to search for the shooter.

Teens arrested for egging
Two 14-year-old girls who opted to spend Mischief Night hurling eggs at a home on the 1500 block of Myrtlewood Street wound up facing criminal charges, said police.
Police responding to a report of somebody throwing eggs in the area around 7:30 p.m. last Wednesday saw the pair in action, said Sgt. Steve Biello of South Detectives.
Police charged the youths with criminal mischief, added the sergeant.
One of the teens is from the 1300 block of Myrtlewood Street and the other is a resident of the 1300 block of South 29th Street, police said.
Shot in the buttocks
A 17-year-old told police someone shot him in the buttocks while he was standing at 20th and McClellan streets early Friday, but claimed he didn’t see or hear his attacker, said police.
After the 12:30 p.m. incident, the teen was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was listed in stable condition, said Sgt. Steve Biello of South Detectives.
Police continue to search for a motive in the shooting, said Biello.
Two nabbed in robberies
First District police officers arrested two 18-year-olds and charged them with the Halloween heist of a store on the 1500 block of McKean Street.
Armed with a description of the robbers from the manager of Media Variety, the officers arrested the suspects shortly after the 1:30 p.m. holdup as they were leaving a home the 2000 block of McKean, said Sgt. Steve Biello of South Detectives.
After further investigation, police obtained a search warrant for the house, and found a 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun that allegedly was used in the variety-store holdup. Police also seized ammunition for the shotgun as well as a .38-caliber handgun, said Biello.
The suspects also were charged with two other area robberies, including an Oct. 24 residential break-in on the 2400 block of South Mildred Street, and an Oct. 22 mugging on the 1500 block of Mifflin Street, said Biello.
Police would not release the names of the suspects because the pair is still under investigation for additional robberies in South Philly, added the sergeant.
One of the teens is from the 2000 block of South 20th Street, while the other is from the 3100 block of Armat Street in Germantown.
