Fatal hail of bullets

Homicide detectives continue to search for the killer who gunned down a 20-year-old Grays Ferry man Monday.

Alonzo Brown was struck three times — once each in the upper back, left arm and right hand — while outside his home on the 2200 block of Reed Street, officials said.

Seventeenth District police responding to a report of gunshots found the victim slumped over the landing to his residence, said Capt. Charles Bloom of the Homicide Unit.

The triggerman fired the fatal shots shortly before 5 a.m., the captain said.

Medic 14 transported the victim to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was pronounced dead at 5:25 a.m., said Bloom.

The next day around 2:45 p.m., a construction worker found a black revolver inside an alley behind a locked fence on the 1300 block of South 23rd Street, Bloom said. At press time yesterday, investigators were still unsure about whether the firearm was the murder weapon.

Charged in drunk-driving death

A 27-year-old local man has been charged with murder and a slew of offenses in the drunk-driving death of a Mount Airy woman.

The incident occurred Monday minutes after 11 p.m. at Reed Street and Columbus Boulevard, said Sgt. George Golden of the Accident Investigation Division.

Shawn Burrows, 27, of the 8000 block of Fayette Street, was pronounced dead at the scene, the sergeant said.

Damen T. Robinson, of the 2000 block of South Eighth Street, was charged with murder, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter, DUI and driving with a suspended license involved in a crash/death, said Golden.

Witnesses told police they spotted the suspect traveling at speeds from 70-100 miles per hour — and running several red lights while heading south on Columbus Boulevard from Dave & Buster’s, Golden said.

When Robinson got to Columbus and Washington, he allegedly veered left to pass cars stopped at the light and proceeded to run that traffic signal as well, reported the sergeant.

Continuing south to Reed, the suspect ran another red light and slammed broadside into Burrows as she was turning left onto Columbus, Golden said.

Robinson was take to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where blood was obtained for chemical testing for suspicion of substance abuse, said Golden. He was not injured in the crash.

Child’s play turns tragic

A 6-year-old finds a .38-caliber pistol under a bed inside a home on the 2200 block of Montrose Street.

His 8-year-old brother takes that gun away from him, but somehow, police say the gun ended up back in the hands of the 6-year-old — who then fired one shot, gravely wounding the very child who tried to prevent the tragedy in the first place.

That’s how Homicide Capt. Charles Bloom recounted the tragic chain of events that took place just after noon last Friday.

The victim was rushed to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and listed in critical condition with a single gunshot wound to the chest, said Sgt. James Schrack of South Detective Division at the scene.

Luckily, the 8-year-old is expected to recover, officials said.

The District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case and will decide whether or not to press charges against the owner of the weapon — the boys’ father — who police say was down the block talking to a neighbor when the shooting occurred.

The child’s family has asked CHOP not to release any information on his condition, said a hospital spokesperson Monday night.

The two siblings were playing inside the home when the 6-year-old found the firearm under a mattress, police said.

A 16-year-old brother was asleep in another room, and two more brothers, 10 and 11, also were home at the time, said Bloom.

Officials are calling the incident a preventable tragedy because, as one detective said, the gun should have been locked or secured from a child’s grasp.

Dissatisfied customer

Apparently disgruntled by the service rendered, a man allegedly beat up a woman he picked up to perform a sexual act on him, police said.

The 32-year-old victim told police the offender — whom she knew only as "John" — picked her up in his car Saturday around 7 a.m. on the 1700 block of Moore Street, said Sgt. Steve Biello of South Detectives.

The dissatisfied john allegedly punched the victim in her face and then hit her over the head with a 40-ounce bottle of beer, the sergeant said.

Medic 11 transported the victim to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she was treated for facial abrasions and swelling, said Biello.
