Robbers kill teen

For the 19-year-old son of Cambodian immigrant merchants, it was simply a matter of walking in at the wrong moment.

And for that, Luckily Ky paid dearly. The Community College of Philadelphia student was gunned down after he walked in on a robbery of his parents’ store at 17th and Moore streets Monday night, said Inspector Bill Colarulo of the Police Public Affairs Unit.

Two gunmen entered New Market around 6 p.m. and attempted to rob it, the inspector said.

The culprits ordered the victim’s mother to step out from behind a bulletproof-glass-enclosed counter where she was working, Colarulo said. At that time, Ky walked through a door in the shop that leads to the family’s upstairs dwelling, noted Colarulo. The assailants grabbed the teen, and in the ensuing struggle, Ky was shot twice in the chest and once in the right ankle, the inspector said.

Ky was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he died an hour later. The culprits fled empty-handed, Colarulo said.

On Tuesday afternoon, Capt. Richard Ross of the Homicide Division held a press conference asking the public’s help in finding the killers.

Assault arrest nets guns, drugs

In a twisted tale involving guns, drugs and abuse, a man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted his lover — who also happens to be his cousin, police said.

Charles Iannece, 45, from the 1100 block of South 10th Street, was charged with aggravated and simple assault, possession of an instrument of crime, possession with intent to deliver and possession of a controlled substance, said Sgt. James Schrack of South Detective Division. The drug and weapons charges stem from what police found during a search of Iannece’s home.

On Dec. 1 around 11 a.m., Third District police responded to a disturbance at the home and were met by the 37-year-old victim, the sergeant said.

The woman told police that her cousin, with whom she lives, had assaulted her, said Schrack.

After seeing bruises on the victim’s face, police arrested Iannece, the sergeant added. But officers noticed something else while in the home — two guns, said Schrack.

So investigators returned with a search warrant and confiscated five handguns and a rifle — all owned by the suspect, the sergeant said.

Along with the weapons, 7 grams of amphetamines and over $2,500 cash also were seized, said Schrack.

Bullet sticks around

After detectives unsuccessfully searched a convenience store at 22nd and Wharton for a bullet fired during a robbery last Thursday, they got a call Monday from the merchant — who had found the piece of evidence.

The slug had lodged in a tube of bubble gum sold to a customer, said Sgt. Steve Biello of South Detectives.

It was the same bullet that tore through the 29-year-old victim’s hand when an armed robber fired at her in the 7 p.m. incident, the sergeant said.

Wearing a camouflage hat and scarf, the culprit entered the store, pointed a small-caliber revolver at the victim and demanded money, said Biello. When a customer walked in, the offender unloaded a single shot at the merchant and fled $82 richer, the sergeant said.

The victim was treated and released from Jefferson University Hospital.
