ECKEL TO THE SUPER BOWL

Kyle Eckel, featured in the Jan. 17 edition, is heading to Glendale, Ariz., next week as his New England Patriots defeated the San Diego Chargers 21-12 in the Jan. 20 AFC Championship Game. The Pats will face the New York Giants Feb. 3 for Super Bowl XLII.

Eckel tallied one special teams tackle in Sunday’s win.


ROMAN WINS AGAIN

Roman Catholic defeated Neumann-Goretti 62-60 in Monday’s Catholic League South boys’ basketball contest to complete the regular-season sweep. A layup off the hands of Roman’s Courtney Stanley sealed the victory. The young Saints are now 9-8 overall and 4-4 in league play. Jamal Wilson paced the South Philly squad with 17 points, while Tony Chennault added 16 and Daniel Stewart had 13. Neumann-Goretti will try to get back on the winning track tomorrow night at Kennedy-Kenrick, 7:30 p.m.


SEYAA SOCCER NEWS

The SEYAA girls’ varsity soccer team captured the Starfinder Organization indoor championship by defeating Masterman High School in a double overtime shootout 1-0.


SEYAA SPRING SPORTS

SEYAA is holding registration for T-ball, baseball and softball, which begins April 20. The age divisions are: 4 to 6 for T-ball; 7 to 8 for pitching machine; 8 to 10 and 10 to 12 for live pitch; 13 to 15 and 16 to 19 for Babe Ruth; and 12 to 14 for girls’ softball. Games will be played at Seventh and Bigler streets.

Register from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturdays at the Taggart School, Fifth and Porter streets, in the ground-floor gym.

YOUTH HOCKEY FOUNDATION

The Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation is adding after-school programming to three rinks as the result of an expanded partnership with the Department of Recreation. The new participating rinks are the Scanlon Rink in Kensington, The Laura Sims Skatehouse in West Philadelphia and the Simons Youth Access and Teen Center in West Oak Lane.
