Casino relocation gets mayor’s John Hancock

A Center City slots parlor is one step closer to becoming a reality.

Nov. 16, Mayor Michael Nutter signed zoning legislation for Foxwoods Casino Philadelphia to move from Reed Street and Columbus Boulevard to The Gallery at Market East. Three days earlier, City Council approved bills to establish a commercial entertainment zone on the block bordered by Market, Filbert, 10th and 11th streets.

The day before Nutter inked the deal, he met with casino opponents and Chinatown community leaders and received petitions against the new site with 24,000 signatures, according to a published report.

The next step for Foxwoods is to apply to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board for permission to relocate.
