After screaming obscenities about those of Mexican descent and throwing beer cans at a Hispanic employee, an area man was taken into custody.

Police responded to San Lucas Grocery, 1526 Tasker St., for a person with a weapon at 9:40 p.m. Feb. 2, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Mark Woodard, 39, of the 1500 block of South 15th Street, allegedly entered the store, shouted offensive racial slurs and smashed the inside food displays with a baseball bat. Woodard also is believed to have thrown beer cans at a 30-year-old employee in addition to breaking the front store window and the man’s automobile windows with the bat, which police later recovered.

The employee was unharmed when police arrived, Tolliver said.

Woodard was arrested at the scene and charged with ethnic intimidation, disorderly conduct, criminal mischief, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
