Grief relief

I am sensing a lot of anger around the neighborhood. Many of you are fuming about that property tax increase the City graciously mailed out recently. Others have reached their boiling point with the sinking ship known as the School District of Philadelphia (Farewell Edward Bok Technical High School, Smith Academics Plus and George Washington School). Of course, later this spring, some of you will be at the Pennsylvania Convention Center and Lincoln Financial Field stating why South Philly is a horrible spot for the City’s second casino.

If I had solutions to all of the above-mentioned issues, I would’ve share them, but there is a better chance of someone from South Philly winning the Powerball. Too many of us let these how-can-they-do-that? situations tear our lives apart. The Readers’ Choice Awards in our Spring Guide provides a much less stressful conversational piece (feel free to debate any of this year’s winners amongst yourselves). Unlike the City-related issues, the votes from you, our loyal readers, determined what 40 people, places and things made the 2013 list.

This year’s group includes familiar faces, as well as some first-timers. Be forewarned: Thumbing through the Cuisine and Sweet Tooth sections of this week’s issue may cause one to unexpectedly say “I’ve got to have one of those.” Don’t fight it as you’ll be up all night saying “I should have ordered those cheesesteaks.”

For those craving water ice, the good news is that the first day of spring is less than a week away. With it, comes warmer days, more time in the park and the reopening of water ice stands. Look at our expanded “What’s Happening” section (starting on page 21) for a complete list of upcoming concerts, exhibits and activities. Hopefully, the Phillies will be the team that finally delivers a cheer-worthy season.

Without any further delay, it’s time to announce the winner for …
