Escape route

A man escaped harm by fleeing and dropping a few belongings to prevent thieves from pursuing him.

The 20-year-old was walking on the 2500 block of Washington Avenue underneath the rail bridge when two men approached him at 1 a.m. Sunday, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. One of the thieves said, “You know what it is. Give up your cell phone,” keeping his hand under his shirt, which made it unclear whether he had a gun or not.

Instead of giving in to the offenders, the man crossed the street and started to run, but the other man chased him, Tolliver said. While sprinting he dropped his $200 Beats by Dre headphones and his backpack that contained work clothes and a hoodie. The offenders stopped pursuing him and gathered the items he left behind.

The first perpetrator was described as Latino with a light complexion, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10, thin and wearing a navy blue hoodie with a graphic design on it while the other offender was described as black with a dark complexion, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10, thin and wearing a black hoodie.
