Food-tacular plans

The winners of the South Philly Review’s inaugural Foodie 5 showdown are …

P’unk Burger

Sorry readers, we are keeping the results under wraps for one more week. The top finishers in each of the 32 categories, however, have been notified, and will be featured in the April 20 edition.

Instead of simply teasing you with colorful images of tasty appetizers, main courses and desserts, people will get the opportunity to taste many of the winning items. Do we have your attention? Then pencil in the Best Foods of South Philly, presented by Liscio’s Bakery & Deli, on next week’s must-do list. This new SPR event is taking place Thursday, April 20, at Penns Landing Caterers, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd,, from 6–9 p.m. As of press time, more than 12 places were on board to be part of this sampling smorgasboard. John’s Roast Pork, Anthony’s Italian Coffee & Chocolate House, Primo Hoagies, T&N Homemade Kitchen, Toll Man Joe’s, Bomb Bomb, Isgro Pastries, P’unk Burger, Chickie’s & Pete’s, Cacia’s Bakery, Fuel and Sarcone’s Bakery were all confirmed to be part of this special night. Additional places will be announced on the South Philly Review Facebook page.

Like our previous food-themed events such as the Pizza Olympics, sampling stations will be spread out across the ballroom. Tickets ($12) can be purchased online at newspaper-media-group.ticketleap.com/southphillyfoods in advance. A limited number of tickets will be available to purchase at the door ($15). There will also be a cash bar available for soft drinks, beer, wine and liquor. Guests must be 21 or over to attend. Limited seating will be available.

Musical entertainment will be provided by DJ Eric Bartello.

Judging by the social media interaction on our Facebook page, the anticipation is building for what is shaping up to be a fun and filling affair.

No matter which establishments claim bragging rights in next week’s issue, it’s extremely clear there are plenty of great options around South Philly for burgers, wings, pizza, doughnuts, cupcakes, as well as numerous other items. If one of your favorites came up short in the win column, it doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with the food. Like elections, it simply came down to the popular vote, with less than five votes separating several of the top-two finishers.

Next week’s Best of South Philly Foods event will be the perfect opportunity to see, and of course taste, what makes this year’s winners stand out above the rest.
