Top Businesswomen of South Philly

Janet Cedrone Alvarez, owner
Cedrone’s Flowers, 800 Lombard St.
Number of years in business: 28

Why did you decide to set up your business near South Philly?
My in-laws always had a grocery store at this location from the ’60s. (Even though it’s near Center City, we are still considered South Philly, five blocks south of Market Street). After I married Carlos Alvarez (1969), we took over the grocery store until 1984. In 1988, we had the opportunity to move here from Packer Park and opened Cedrone’s Flowers in ’90

What is your favorite thing about South Philly?
I cannot just say one thing, it’s impossible! Growing up in the ’50s and ’60s were so very special. From our little home in the middle of the block, my school, Francis Read, and neighbors that became more like family. Saturdays during the summer, you can hear the kid selling “fresh pretzels” in the early morning while still in bed, the handsome, South Philly guys washing their cars to go out that night and of course, Mommy giving out the chores of cleaning every week! And then, the best, Sunday morning! The aroma of Mom frying the sausage and meatballs for the “gravy” for Sunday dinner. South Philly is and will always be ME!

Why did you decide to set up your business near South Philly?
I grew up in South Philadelphia where arts and culture were evident in every household. At least 15 members of the Philadelphia Orchestra graduated from South Philadelphia High School. Family values were the most important thing in your life and the corner grocery stores and restaurants were known around the world.

What is your favorite thing about South Philly?
Philadelphia was changing and families were moving out. I wanted all children, including my own, to experience what I had growing up in this wonderful city. I was determined not to leave Philadelphia, so in 1989 I wrote the original model, its mission was to provide children in Philadelphia with a strong academic education including classical arts, sciences and language. A private school model without the cost of private school.

Anything new South Philly residents should know about?
At this time we have no plans to expand. However, we never thought our little school would grow to four locations. I lived on Broad Street for 30 years and still live in South Philadelphia.

Dorette Rota Jackson and Dawn Rhoades, owners/publishers
Philadelphia RowHome Magazine, 12th and Moore streets
Number of years in business: 13

Why did you decide to set up your business in South Philly?
My sister Dawn and I were born and raised in South Philadelphia, the fourth generation to call this neighborhood home. We realized that there was something very special about living in a neighborhood filled with families and businesses that cherish the history, culture and traditions of their ancestors. We wanted to find a way to bring people together — to do business, laugh, remember the good ole’ days and plan for better ones ahead. We tell their stories, acknowledge their accomplishments and pave the way for future generations to embrace our city as their own.
River to River. One Neighborhood.

What is your favorite thing about South Philly?
Its people and the memories that bind us. Regardless of the neighborhood you call home, we all share a commitment to family and friends; a love of heritage; and an appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the people who came before us — the parents and grandparents who chose to live here, work hard, raise families and teach us how to celebrate life.

Anything new South Philly residents should know about?
We will continue to promote all that is positive about the city we know and love. Its food, families and traditions. We will tell the unique stories of local businesses — the economic backbone of our neighborhoods — and invite people near and far to experience all they have to offer.

South Philly has a great sense of community. Many people that live here enjoy supporting local small business, and I didn’t want them to feel like they needed to go far for great food.

What is your favorite thing about South Philly?
My favorite thing about South Philly is its diversity. In recent years with the huge influx of people moving to South Philly, the people have become more diverse and with that the foods and shops have become diverse, too. You can have almost anything within minutes.

Anything new South Philly residents should know about?
We don’t have anything set in stone but we are always looking for the opportunity to help the community or expand or put a new concept if the neighborhood calls for it.

Arlene Rawlings, Teresa Stolfo, owners
and Dina Silvanio, assistant director/soon-to-be partner
Forever Young Nursery School and Daycare, 1125 W. Moyamensing Ave. Number of years in business: 29 years in September

Why did you decide to set up your business in South Philly?
We set up our business in South Philly because it has always been our home and is a place like no other in the world. The world thinks of South Philly as the home of Rocky. We think of it as the home of the most caring people in the world. A few years ago when one of our youngest students was diagnosed with cancer, a young employee mentioned that we should have a benefit. Those few words morphed into the proudest day in our history.

What is your favorite thing about South Philly?
We work, live and thrive in South Philly because there is no other place that we would want to be

Anything new South Philly residents should know about?
The past 28 years that Teresa and I have shared as partners has enriched both of our lives. We look forward to Dina stepping into her mom’s shoes and continuing the proud and positive tradition that we have worked so hard to maintain.

Joanne Renzi, owner
Fitness Works, 714 Reed St.
Number of years in business: 20-plus

Why decide to set up business in South Philly: I grew up in South Philly and was a personal trainer and aerobics instructor when there was an opportunity to take over what was then the “Reed Fitness Center.” Over the 20-plus years, we’ve expanded to the full 23,000 square feet, renovated and upgraded the saltwater swimming pool and all the workout areas and really created a one-stop health and fitness center that offers everything under one roof.

Favorite thing about South Philly:
Community. Sometimes I feel like I have the largest extended family ever. There are people who met each other at Fitness Works, have gotten married, had children, and now their children are coming to Fitness Works.

Anything new South Philly residents should know about?
We’re always evolving at Fitness Works and trying to offer new options for working out. We’ve recently partnered with Holly Waters and Fitness Alive to offer swimming lessons for all ages and will be starting a stand up paddle board class, in addition to offering pool parties as well. We’ve also recently added 21 new spin bikes and upgraded our spinning studio.

Jennifer Colligas-Moyer, coowner
ShopRite of Whitman Plaza, 330 W. Oregon Ave.
Number of years in business: 12

Why did you decide to set up your business in South Philly?
My father loved the community and neighborhood feel of South Philly. In 2005, he had the opportunity to take over the ShopRite of Snyder Plaza. As we outgrew our space there, he had a vision to move to our current location. Unfortunately, he passed away in January of 2015. However, my family was able to realize his vision and moved our store to Whitman Plaza in September of 2016.

What is your favorite thing about South Philly?
I love the people and the community feel. South Philly is truly a passionate and tight-knit community. I love to see people from the neighborhood coming in to shop and watching them run into each other. Asking each other how they are doing, standing to chat a bit, how’s the family, etc.

Any future plans that South Philly residents should know about?
Thanks to our faithful patrons and neighborhood community, we are celebrating our first anniversary at Whitman Plaza on Sept. 9! Please stop in, say hello and enjoy the festivities! Keep an eye out for our scheduled live entertainment once a month as well as our quarterly consumer panels. We would love to hear your feedback on how we are doing. Maria Olivieri, Owner
Olivieri & Associates Inc., 2401 S. Water St.
Number of years in business: 18

Why did you decide to set up your business in South Philly?
My family’s jewelry store is on Broad Street, and I remember as a child watching the Broad Street subway being built. That was definitely the impetus behind my career choice — and the fact that I love a challenge! Once I convinced my family that construction was how I wanted to proceed in my work life, I attended Temple University where I focused on estimating jobs, reading blueprints and preparing budgets.

What is your favorite thing about South Philly?
My love of South Philly stems from the fact that my immediate family, as well as my extended family, all still reside and work in South Philly. I can’t think of any place else I would rather be.

Any future plans that South Philly residents should know about?
Mayor Kenney’s Proposed 2018–2023 Capital Budget stated that “Right now, half of Philadelphia’s jobs are located in Center City and University City. In order to create economic opportunity in all of our neighborhoods, the City needs to play a role in driving investment in other locations.” This statement, coupled with the many planned improvements to the Philadelphia streets, during this period, will hopefully provide a future with many more opportunities for local companies, such as myself, to remain productive, profitable businesses in our community.

Tricia Pinto, co-owner
AJ Appliance, Inc., 1437 W. Passyunk Ave.
Years in business: 35

Why did you decide to set up your business in South Philly?
We decided to set up business in South Philly because my husband Joe was born and raised here, 19th & Snyder.
The local community has played a huge role in our success. We grew our business from the needs of the community. First, as a repair and service of major appliances. Then as a local place that neighbors trusted, where the DIY’s could come and to seek advice and purchase parts needed for their family appliance. We have since helped develop our local community by building on a vacant lot, to selling new appliances at a place where customers could stroll through the aisle to touch and see the kitchen and laundry units that they were looking to purchase for their homes. AJ Appliance Inc. became the one-stop shop for all your appliance needs. We are building trusting relationships to last decades.

What is your favorite thing about South Philly?
The people, the diversity of culture and all the good eats! We have a variety of fabulous restaurants all within walking distance, the close proximity to the arts in Center City, our public transportation system, we are close to everything.

Any future plans that South Philly residents should know about?
We are part of the community. We are here to serve and we will continue to provide our neighbors and customers with friendly, helpful advice for all their families’ appliance needs.

Jacquelyn Fitzpatrick, financial center manager
Univest Bank and Trust Co., 1536 S. Broad St.
Number of years in business: 141

Why did you decide to set up your business in South Philly?
Univest Bank and Trust Co. has been doing business in Philadelphia for years. The company, however, officially started calling South Philadelphia home when it acquired Valley Green Bank in January 2015. There are many growing neighborhoods throughout South Philadelphia, and Univest is committed to helping individuals and businesses here achieve their financial dreams while also doing our part to support the local community. Our mantra is that we take care of our customers, we take care of the community and we take care of each other. While we started in a small town in Montgomery County in 1876, this mantra resonates really well with the culture in South Philadelphia.

What is your favorite thing about South Philly?
The people are fantastic and it has been great building relationships with local residents, businesses and nonprofit organizations. There is a real sense of community here.

Anything new South Philly residents should know about?
Univest Bank and Trust Co.’s commitment to full-scope financial services and personalized customer attention paves the way for continued growth. In two short years, Univest has doubled in size and has built a strong network of financial centers. Today, we have South Philadelphia in addition to five other offices throughout the city (University City, Fairmount, Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill and Northeast Philadelphia).

Barbara Capozzi, owner
Capozzi Real Estate / Insurance, 3320 S. 20th St.
Number of years in business: 20-plus years at this location. (three generations at this location)

Why did you decide to set up your business in South Philly?
If was a natural outgrowth of what my dad had done many years before.
My dad developed this area from farmland in the late 1950s — early ’60s into 1,200-plus homes. Starting in the late ’90s, I started working to improve the west side of 20th Street in a similar manner. The west side was mostly dirty old trucking companies with tractor trailer traffic and worst. Now we have Reserve, Villas, Regency — 330 quality newer homes in various styles and configurations, 95 percent owner occupied.

What is your favorite thing about South Philly?
The wide variety here, within close proximity. We have fabulous restaurants of all kinds, super doctors, our beautiful and beloved FDR Park (golf, tennis, boats, bikes, etc.), our convenience to airport and shore and Center City. Plenty of parking and green spaces, too.

Anything new South Philly residents should know about?
I am working on a plan to build 23 custom townhomes, if all goes well. The demand is high, the supply is low for quality, modern homes in a safe, clean, convenient community. I also will NOT give up until I get a quality senior facility close to us. There is a dire need in our own local area for a safe, clean, happy, live-in senior care facility, like a top quality Four Seasons for seniors. … Their older homes can then be recycled in the market to younger families who need the space and who can better handle the maintenance and expenses of a home. I will keep searching for the perfect location, I know the need is there. Stay tuned.

Diane Pirollo, executive director Methodist Hospital Foundation
Previously vice president of support services and staff nurse
Methodist Hospital Jefferson Health
Number of years in business: 125

Why did Methodist decide to set up in South Philly?
Dr. Scott Stewart, a physician who practiced medicine his whole life in South Philadelphia, first planned the idea of Methodist Hospital back in 1877. He bequeathed $250,000 in his will to create the hospital to meet the health-care needs of the South Philadelphia community. He was the founder. From his bequest and additional fund raising by the Methodist Episcopal Church, the hospital was built and opened its doors in 1892.

What is your favorite thing about South Philly?
The people. There are great people in South Philly. The location is good because there is so much within walking distance. You really feel like you are at home.

Anything new South Philly residents should know about?
We are always changing to improve. We established the Jefferson Advanced Spine Center (on the third floor) in the spring. We were able to establish another service that we never had here before. It really enhances our orthopedic program. It brings in more services to service the community.
