The Young Chances Foundation is hosting a Supplies 4 Success Back 2 School Community Block Festival on Saturday (Sept. 2) noon-8 p.m. at the YCF Community Engagement Center, 1500 S. 27th St. There will be a book bag and school supply giveaway, live performances, a moon bounce, games and more. Whitman Council is accepting donations of school supplies for children attending Sharswood School, 2300 S. 2nd St., who can’t afford to get them. Items can be dropped off at the office, 2455 S. 3rd St., 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Backpacks, tissues, rulers, highlighters, Post-It-notes, markers and crayons are some of the items needed. Call 215–468–4056. …

The 3rd Police District Community Day is taking place on Saturday, Sept. 9 in front of the police district, 1100 Wharton St., 11 a.m.-4 p.m. This is a chance to meet police officers and neighbors. There will be music, refreshments, games and prizes. Law enforcement, city and community agencies have tables set up to share information. For those who enjoy outdoor music festivals, the free-to-attend Yo’ South Philly Phestival is set for Sept. 10 at the St. Richard’s schoolyard, 18th and Pollock streets. The Business, Sugar Rush Rocks, Benny Marsella, Gabby Delisi, Felicia Punzo, King Arthur and Charlie Gracie and several others will be there to entertain the crowd. Galdo’s, T&N Homemade Kitchen and John’s Water Ice are a few of the food vendors confirmed for the 10 a.m.-10 p.m. gathering.

For those planning ahead, Ss. Neumann-Goretti homecoming weekend is taking place Sept. 29 and 30. The homecoming dance for current students is 8–10 p.m. Sept. 29 at the school, 1736. S. 10th St. Tickets are $20. On Saturday, Sept. 30, the Saints will play West Catholic in this year’s alumni football game taking place at the super site, 10th and Bigler streets. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. All alumni are encouraged to attend. Tickets are $5. …

The Eighth Annual Mums & Mutts Fall Festival, benefiting local animal rescues, returns to Burke Playground, Second and Jackson streets, on Saturday, Oct. 14. Gina Gannon from 6ABC will host the festivities. This family-friendly event (yes, leashed pups are welcome, too) will include live music, food and drinks, vendors, giveaways, kids zone and more. Vegan Doughnuts anyone? For those suddenly intrigued by the concept. Dottie’s Donuts has opened its second storefront location in Queen Village, 509 S. 6th St. Cherry vanilla and matcha pistachio and maple pecan are a few of the popular flavors. …

The Philadelphia Flyers announced earlier this week they will be retiring Eric Lindros’ No. 88 jersey prior to the Jan. 18 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He will join Bernie Parent, Mark Howe, Barry Ashbee, Bill Barber and Bobby Clarke in the Wells Fargo Center rafters. Lindros appeared in 486 games for the Flyers over eight seasons, rising to fifth on the club’s all-time scoring list with 290 goals and 369 assists for 659 points.
