If you take a stroll along West Passyunk Avenue on Saturday between 15th Street and South Broad Street, there is a very good chance you will see people enjoying a variety of sausage offerings. No, it is not National Sausage Day. This gathering is strictly South Philly — outsiders are more than welcome to attend — as the Newbold Community Development Corporation is hosting its third annual South Philly SausageFest from noon to 8:00 p.m. The event is free to attend.
“SausageFest has become a great event for the Newbold community, and we’re so excited to bring it back for a third year,” Newbold CDC president Tim Lidiak said. “This year’s festival will feature several new offerings — including Manatawny Still Works which will be teaming up with The Thirsty Soul’s Billy Hines, the New Orleans-inspired bar maestro, who will be serving up some delightful cocktails, including his famous Sucker Punch!”
Neighborhood restaurants will be cooking up a variety of sausage-inspired dishes. Café y Chocolate, 2100 S. Norwood St., is serving chorizo tacos and burritos and chicken azado tacos. Maglio Sausage, 3632 S. 3rd St., will be selling hot and sweet Italian sausage and peppers; Mike’s BBQ, coming soon to 11th and Morris streets, will have mac & cheese Philly Phattie (sausage stuffed with mac & cheese), smoked brisket cheesesteak with onions and Cooper sharp wiz, and Mexican street corn with sour cream-lime mayo, Cojita cheese and cayenne; South Philly Tap Room, 1509 Mifflin St., is preparing spicy Italian sausage and peppers, NoEvil Vegan Italian Sausage. The Station Bar & Grill, 1550 McKean St., will offer slow-cooked BBQ pork ribs, potato salad and vegetable kabobs. Tap Room on 19th, 19th and Ritner streets, will be cooking up chorizo sandwiches with pineapple salsa and cilantro-lime crema.
For those concerned about getting thirsty, the festival will also feature draft beer from eight Philly breweries, plus local cider and special offerings from Manatawny Still Works, 1603 E. Passyunk Ave. Brewery ARS, 1927–29 West Passyunk Ave., will have multiple selections to choose from, including Maple Hill, a lightly smoked sweet potato saison) along with two new releases. Point Breeze Brewing Co., 1225 S. 28th St., is serving up Point Breeze Pale Ale, Reed Street Rye IPA and Spiced IPA with cardamom and ginger. The Thirsty Soul, coming later this fall to 1551 W. Passyunk Ave., is preparing some of their much talked about Sucker Punch — Manatawny Still Works rum infused with cinnamon, agave and pineapple juice, as well as The Elder — Manatawny Still Works Keystone Whiskey, infused with elderberry flower, orange, agave and ginger ale.
Beer tickets can be purchased in advance as well as at the event (four for $18, 10 for $35 or 18 for $54).
This family-friendly event will include fun activities for children — face painting, crayon station, water sprayer — along with a full lineup of live music. The Blue Pharaohs will start things off at noon, followed by Shakey Lyman (1 p.m.), Sun Hat (2 p.m.), Firestorm, featuring KAND-D (3 p.m.), New Pony (4 p.m.), and The Whips (7 p.m.).
Proceeds from the South Philly SausageFest will benefit and fund Newbold CDC’s Street Cleaning Program, which provides employment for 10 disabled Philadelphia residents.
