Doggie day at Burke Playground

By Bill Gelman

There is no doubt dogs of all sizes and breeds will be the center of attention on Saturday (Oct. 14) at Burke Playground, Second and Jackson streets. They are the guests of honor at the Eighth Annual Mums & Mutts Fall Festival, which benefits local animal rescues. “Look at that cute little puppy!,” will likely be the popular phrase of the day.

Many of those four-legged cuties will be wishing for much more than a friendly hello — they want a loving family to take them home. This is a big part of what makes this annual Pennsport-based event extra special.

“The Mums and Mutts Fall Festival is an amazing way for us to help raise much needed funds for local area animal rescues and shelters, as well as provide an event where people can come and meet adoptable pets,” Megan McFarland, a former South Philly Review Difference Maker who started the organization in 2010, said. “There are so many pets that need loving homes, and my dream is that we can help many of them find just that!”

Over the last seven years, the organization has helped hundreds of pets find forever homes. Many of them have appeared on the pages of the South Philly Review as part of the weekly Adopt This Pet feature. Others are featured during the PHL17 Morning News/Eye Opener segment every Friday.

This weekend’s event is the chance to interact with the dogs, and possibly go home with an extra family member. The festivities will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include live music, food and drink, giveaways, vendors and more. Gina Gannon from 6 ABC News is the host.

There will be plenty of activities for the children, too, with a kids zone, face painting, games, arts and crafts, bouncy house and magic show. Pets are encouraged to come dressed to impress so they can participate in the doggie costume contest.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.
