Fall Guide: What to do this fall

The recent string of 80-degree days may have created a little confusion with the seasons, but there is no doubt fall has arrived. Besides the silence coming out of Citizens Bank Park, colorful leaves are starting to fall to the ground. Add the eye-catching Halloween decorations around the neighborhood, and the scene is set for exciting days ahead. Philly Pops A Stars Wars Celebration is described as a thrilling tribute to the popular space fantasy franchise in, believe it or not, its 40th anniversary year. Eddie Lang Day 2017 is the seventh annual event celebrating the life and music of this former South Philadelphia resident, also known as the father of jazz guitar. Oct. 13

Francis Scott Key Elementary School Back to School Movie Night Fundraiser will teach students the importance of giving back as proceeds from the event will go toward disaster relief for Mexico and Puerto Rico. Besides “The Boss Baby,” the school will be collecting donations and selling pizza, egg rolls, snacks and drinks. Oct. 14

Shot Tower Fall Festival will include pizza, snacks, face painting and games. Costumes are encouraged. The Ed McBride Block Party keeps the outdoor festival season going with live music, wiffle ball and corn-hole tournaments, food, a beer garden, games/activities for the kids, giveaways and more. The wiffle ball tournament will consist of three-person teams while the corn-hole tournament will have two members per team. The $25 per person entry fee includes a T-shirt and discounted drinks. Winning teams will receive a trophy and their team name on the Ed McBride Cup. The event is being hosted by Moonshine Philly on East Moyamensing Avenue between Mifflin and McClellan streets. Ninth Annual Blocktoberfest is taking over four blocks — South Street between Broad and 18th streets — and will showcase a wide selection of craft breweries from around the country, food from neighborhood vendors and food trucks while energizing local acts entertain the crowd. Oct. 15

The Meredith on the Run 5K is a 3.1 mile run/walk that will raise money for the William Meredith Elementary School. This fourth annual event is open to runners and walkers of all ages. Philly Fights Cancer Round 3 is a star-studded event at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The mistress of ceremonies is the legendary “EGOT” (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) winner Whoopi Goldberg. John Legend, “America’s Got Talent” star and cancer survivor Caly Bevier along with Earth, Wind & Fire will perform.
