Neighborhood Chatter: Now that spring is here, it’s time to have some fun

By Bill Gelman

The annual Meredith Elementary School, 725 S. 5th St., Auction is set for Saturday, April 14, at Penns Landing Caterers, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd., from 5:30 to 11 p.m. This adult-only social affair is open to community members, friends and Meredith families who will have the opportunity to bid on fantastic items. Proceeds from the event go directly toward student needs, which include competing phase one of the schoolyard resurfacing project. There will be dinner, dancing, too. Silent auction bidding will be done online. Early bird tickets are $75 per person (through March 31) and $85 from April 1 to the event date. For more information, visit qvna.org/event/2018-meredith-auction.

Gravy, more specifically red gravy — not sauce — will take center stage once again on Sunday, April 22, at Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., from 4–6 p.m. But who makes the best? In South Philly, the best way to settle the great gravy debate is to hold a friendly competition, more specifically the Fourth Annual Italian Red Gravy Cook-Off hosted by the East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association. Do you think your recipe has what it takes to win the judges’ choice or crowd favorite honors? Well, amateur chefs, here’s your chance to showcase your gravy in a blind-tasting event. Competitors will need to prepare approximately two gallons of homemade sauce, vegetarian, seafood, red meat or other variety. The East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association will provide pre-cooked pasta in chafing dishes on the day of the event. All red gravy submissions will be served in a four-ounce tasting cup to attendees and judges. Contestants receive two complimentary tickets to the event. For more information, visit epcrossing.org.

Speaking of food, The East Passyunk Business Improvement District is gearing up for its annual spring bash and street festival — Flavors on the Avenue — set for Sunday, April 29. This one welcomes wall-to-wall foodies and families seeking a full day of fun. The chefs from the popular South Philly Restaurant Row will once again be cooking up special dishes for the occasion. Stay tuned for more information.
