South Philly’s Chick’s Bar is celebrating its one-year anniversary by having a fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s pediatric cancer research on Sunday, April 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
“We have the top-of-the-line of people in the city [as far as] DJs and bands, and we’re having a big outdoor festival and, of course, entertainment,” said Philip Narducci, the bar’s owner. “We wanted to give something back to the community.”
The event will be held on Washington Avenue between 18th and 19th streets; according to Narducci, police will have the block barricaded off.
Narducci calls his bar a “pioneer” of the gentrifying Point Breeze neighborhood, and he’s particularly grateful to the neighbors for welcoming him into the neighborhood.
“All these neighbors have been with us from day one,” he said. “People have been good to us.”
The event will feature live entertainment from DJ Jerry Blavat, DJ Johnny Looch, the Steve Calabrese Band, recording artist Felicia Punzo and more. A 20- by 30-foot stage is going to be built for the event for the artists to perform on.
In addition to the music, the event will feature a Budweiser bar truck donated by Penn Beer, which will have a full bar, TVs with satellite and draft beer. A variety of food will be served at the event, including roast beef, roast pork and pizza.
Neither Philip Narducci nor his wife Gina have children, but that didn’t stop them from wanting to do something to benefit the lives of kids in need.
“We see these commercials — these children, they’re all fighting for their lives,” Narducci said.

“Its an industrial atmosphere, but the vibe in here is incredible,” said Narducci. “People say they love it here and that they feel like we’re family here.”
The bar won a Zagat award for being one of the hottest new restaurants in the city only about five months after it opened.
“People enjoy coming here and our customer base,” boasted Narducci. “You couldn’t handpick a better crowd.”
