Hawthornes hosts IPA, champagne and rosé block party this Saturday

The hoppiest day of the year in South Philly is back!

Hawthornes Beer Cafe, located at 738 S. 11th Street, presents the ninth edition of their popular IPA block party back again with sparkling surprises added to the mix.

The ninth annual IPA, Champagne and Rose Block Party on Saturday, May 12, 2018, from noon to 8 p.m. will still bring you one of the city’s best line-ups of IPAs for only $5 each, plus small batch champagnes and rosés.

Come out for one of South Philadelphia’s largest spring block parties, with over 75 total selections of beer, champagne, rosé, plus food from ten food trucks, live music, family fun and much more. The party will stretch from 11th and Fitzwater to 11th and Catharine. This all-day, all-ages event is free, open to the public and dog friendly.

Guests must be 21 and older to drink with identification.

“We are proud to present our ninth year for Hawthornes’ Annual IPA, Champagne and Rose Block Party,” said owner Chris Fetfatzes. “What started out as a smaller neighborhood festival outside our doors has taken on a new life and expanded every year. This year, we bring back the roses, champagnes and sparkling wines based on popular demand from 2017. New this year, we welcome 10 of the top food trucks in the city, including Tot Cart, Mama’s Meatballs, Curbside Creamery, Surf N Turf, Papermill, Mommom’s Polish Kitchen and many others. We also have changed up the layout to enhance the guest experience. Last year, the weather didn’t work in our favor and we postponed until summer, but we are thrilled to bring it back to the late spring so we can kick-off outdoor season with you all.”

New for 2018, look for sweet and savory cuisine from ten of the region’s biggest names in food trucks, including Tot Cart, Mama’s Meatballs, Pbon’s, El Tlaloc, Surf N’ Turf, Papermill, Foolish Waffles, Milk and Sugar and Mommom’s Polish Kitchen.

“Special thanks to our friends at The Tot Cart for organizing this new aspect of the festival. We will have something for everyone from pierogis to tacos, meatballs to loaded tots with beer cheese, sweet and savory waffles to spring roll burritos — and everything in between,” Fetfatzes added.

Get ready to dance and rock in the street with live bands from start to finish, including the Trinidelphia (Philadelphia’s premier Caribbean steel drum band), Behind Deadlines (energetic ska, pop-punk band from Philadelphia) and The Paper Shakers (Philadelphia-based rock and roll trio playing iconic favorites plus their own originals).

Music begins at the start of the festival at noon and continues through 8 p.m.

Bring the entire family (including your pup too) as this event has something for everyone — including food and drink, live music and a free kids zone. On top of the line-up of adult beverages for mom and dad, a line-up of food trucks for every palate, also look for free family fun in the Kids’ Zone — perfect for young families who want to make it a day in South Philly. Activities will include a giant inflatable slide, obstacle courses, sidewalk chalk fun, bubbles galore and corn hole. New this year, Hawthornes reserved the lot across the street for the kids zone and extra overflow, with added space for families to enjoy the day out under the sun.

On top of the expanded and new location for the family zone, and the addition of the food trucks, this year’s event will also include more beer stations to reduce wait times in line and a new layout in the main festival area to allow for more room to eat, drink and dance.

From the taps, look for over 60 IPAs that include selections from Half Acre, Pizza Boy, SingleCut, Grey Sail, MIA Brewing, Modern Times, Track 7, St. Bonaface, Brewery Ars, Lord Hobo, Virtue Ciders, Downeast Unfiltered Ciders, Troeg’s, Victory, Dock St, Cape May, Lagunitas, Brew Dog and more.

“We select our beer with an importance on quality and freshness first, followed by the most sought after rarities and newly released beers,” said beer guru Chris Doran.

In addition to the IPAs, look for nearly two dozen roses, sparkling wines and champagnes from France, Spain, Italy and Portugal.

The beer sales are handled exclusively at the entrance, located at 11th and Fitzwater, where the guest will purchase any amount of drink tickets for $5 per ticket with no minimum and no limit.

Each ticket is redeemable at any beer station to receive the beverage of their choice.

This event is free to enter. You must be 21-years-old and older to drink, but all ages are welcome. If a guest is not of age to drink, they will not get a wristband and not be able to purchase adult beverages. Food trucks will have an assortment of non-alcoholic beverages available.
