Philly Roller Derby heads to Spain for playoffs

The renowned Liberty Belles team feature members from South Philly

Philly Roller Derby (PRD) is Philadelphia’s premier women’s roller derby league.

A Philly institution since 2005, Philly Roller Derby practices and competes in a converted warehouse in the city’s Germantown neighborhood. PRD has members from South Philly, including several on the Liberty Belles team.

Philly Roller Derby consists of five teams, but this month, all eyes on are on the Liberty Belles, which is PRD’s top-level travel team.

The Belles are 5–1 this season, ranked 21st in the world and have been invited to the International Women’s Flat Track Derby Association playoffs in A Coruña, Spain at the end of the month.

This is the first transatlantic trip for the Belles, who are training hard to prepare for the competition. In addition to practices and cross-training, they’ve been fundraising, as well. As amateur athletes, each skater has to pay her way to Spain.

The team is selling t-shirts squareup.com/store/philly-roller-derby/ and has a Crowdrise fundraiser (www.crowdrise.com/o/en/campaign/philly-roller-derby-is-headed-to-a-corua-spain) to offset the travel costs for the team.

Throw them a few bucks, and come watch PRD in action next season.
