Mighty Writers El Futuro to host Mexican holiday celebration

The area nonprofit invites the community to celebrate the holidays with the Mighty kids of El Futuro and their families.

On Wednesday, Dec. 19, Mighty Writers will host a traditional Mexican holiday celebration at El Futuro headquarters, located at 1025 South 9th Street at 5:30 p.m.

Mighty Writers (MW), a Philly-based nonprofit on a powerfully simple mission to teach kids to think clearly and write with clarity, is hosting a holiday event that takes cues from traditional Mexican celebrations with drink, music, karaoke, student readings and other surprises.

El Futuro is Mighty Writers’ first bilingual site, established with support from Puentes de Salud, a health and wellness organization for the Mexican immigrant community in South Philadelphia. As many El Futuro students speak Spanish at home and English at school, Mighty Writers tailored its wide range of programs, such as Mighty Toddlers, Reading and Writing, Immigration Stories and others, to incorporate the use of both languages.

The event seeks to attract families in the community to learn more about Mighty Writers programs and resources. Admission is free for children and $15 for adults — with proceeds supporting El Futuro programming and student scholarships.

The event will feature the following lineup:

5:30 p.m. — Nelia Diaz, El Futuro program director, welcomes guests.

5:35 p.m. — Mighty Writers children enter, ask for Posada. *
