To the Editor:

It is abundantly clear to me that our elected officials do not walk the streets of the neighborhoods they represent.  How else to explain the increasingly reckless but ignored by law enforcement drivers who think permission to turn on red exempts them from having to come to a full stop? Or the impatient drivers who begrudgingly “allow” pedestrians to cross while continuing to roll their vehicles toward them?

Twice last week, I was nearly hit by drivers who cruised through the intersection at 11th and Fitzwater in their haste to turn on red, oblivious to the human being trying to cross with the green light.

Eleventh Street and all intersecting streets between Wharton and Bainbridge need to become “no turn on red.”  And the law needs to be strictly enforced. The same should go for Broad and Washington. We have a beautiful new shopping complex but you have to take your life into your hands to get across Washington Avenue to get to it. Why there’s not a red/green arrow for turning cars at this intersection – I just don’t know.  It’s only by the grace of God no one has been killed.

Start making these aggressive drivers put their money where their brakes ought to be and keep pedestrians safe. And woe to any politician who agrees to “take care of” the tickets.
