To the Editor:

Much praise and gratitude to The Review’s Grace Maiorano for her comprehensive report on a recent community meeting of interested parties hosted by Our City Our Schools coalition on the subject of tax abatements and their impact on city schools (March 6). Ms. Maiorano presented all sides of the issue in great detail.

Bottom line: The city’s schools have been neglected for too long and have developed too many hazards for students and staff.

No matter how much real estate development is encouraged by tax abatements, it should not come at the cost of the health and safety of children and their instructors and support staff.

This meeting was a good start toward finding a compromise solution that can restore environmental health to the school system while continuing to stimulate municipal growth.
