Photos: Food giveaway at Fiedler’s office

Residents from Elizabeth Fiedler’s 184th Legislative District were invited to the first monthly Share Food Program last Wednesday.

Families can pick up one free 30-pound box of food each month at Fiedler’s office, located at 2400 S. 9th St. The box contains a range of nutritious foods, including canned vegetables and fruit, beans, cereal, pasta or rice, milk, meat, cheese and fresh fruit seasonally.

“Our first pickup, on Wednesday, Oct. 30, was a big success,” said Katie Longo, Fiedler’s chief of staff. According to Longo, 62 older adults signed up for the program and received their first 30-pound box. Share Food will be back on Wednesday, Nov. 20, for the next pickup date. Fiedler’s office will be the site of a Share Food Program event every month, and pre-registered seniors (or the person they have designated to pick up their box) will be able to pick up a monthly box full of food. Seniors are encouraged to call the office at 215-271-9190 if they would like to sign up. Fiedler’s staff can help them determine if they meet the income guidelines.

“A few months ago, they invited me to tour their warehouse to learn about the work they do across the city,” Longo said. “During that meeting, they discussed one of the programs they run, which provides monthly food boxes to low-income seniors [called the Commodity Supplemental Food Program]. We were excited to offer our office as a location, so we could help bring food to more low-income older adults in our neighborhood. We know many residents, including seniors in our district, are experiencing food insecurity.”
