Monthly Zine Workshop at 4 p.m. at Whitman Library, 200 Snyder Ave. A zine is a self-published magazine or mini-comic that can be about any topic or interest. You’ll learn about simple folding techniques and design layout, and then have the time, space and supplies to work on your own creation.
Crimes and Mysteries Bookish Club at 11:30 a.m. at Whitman Library, 200 Snyder Ave. Join us each month for a casual chat about our favorite detective series, true crime podcasts, unsolved cases, cozy mysteries and more. We’ll pick a different book to read and discuss each month, but there’s no pressure to read along or finish the book before the meeting. This month’s selection is “American Fire: Love, Arson and Life in a Vanishing Land” by Monica Hesse.

Free Nintendo Labo Event for Kids at the South Philly Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, 1700 S. Broad St. Kids in grades K to 12 are invited to come to the South Philadelphia library to use Nintendo Switches and Nintendo Labo to create, decorate, play and build with robots. Friends of the Donatucci Library Monthly Meeting at 6 p.m. at Donatucci Library, 1935 Shunk St. The meeting is open to all members of the community. The Friends of the Donatucci Library is a volunteer organization that advocates for library resources and funding, raises funds for programming and equipment and presents programming at the library throughout the year. East Passyunk Tree Lighting from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tasker Street and Passyunk Avenue. East Passyunk Avenue BID and Passyunk Avenue Revitalization Corporation invite you to kick off the holidays at the Annual East Passyunk Christmas Tree Lighting. Come out with neighbors and friends for an evening filled with holiday music from Alphabet Academy Child Care, Andrew Jackson School HOME rock band, and more. CBS 3 Philly meteorologist Lauren Casey will be emcee. Count down with her as she helps light the official Christmas tree around the singing fountain. Bring an unwrapped new toy for Lauren to bring back to CBS 3 and The CW Philly 57 for their annual Toy Fest holiday drive. You can also donate $10 to the cause by texting JOY to 41444. St. Monica Cash Bingo at St. Monica Senior School Gym, 16th and Shunk. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Games start at 6:30 p.m. A table of eight can be reserved. $25 per person includes three cards for each 10 rounds, dessert and coffee. Attendees are welcome to bring food and drink. 50/50 and special bingo rounds. Must be at least 18 years old to play. Tickets on sale at the rectory. Rectory hours are Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are also available at the door.
Can You Händel It? East Passyunk Pop Up Choir from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Singing Fountain, East Passyunk Avenue and Tasker Street. Join a pop-up choral performance of George Frideric Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus from his 1741 oratorio, Messiah, on East Passyunk Avenue. Together, the group will learn Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus and other carols, accompanied by live musicians. Participation by the general public is open and encouraged. No experience is necessary. Everyone free to participate. The group will be using the Schirmer Edition of Handel’s Messiah. Bring your own score or print out your own copies, as printed copies will be limited. Winter Solstice Celebration from 6 to 7:45 p.m. at the South Philly Library, 1700 S. Broad St. Come relax and celebrate with the Friends of the South Philadelphia Library. Meet your neighbors, enjoy refreshments, make a holiday craft and listen to live music. Interfaith Philadelphia will be honoring the library as a Zone of Peace. The library will also be collecting new, unused, brand-name items for hygiene kits, including baby wipes, liquid soap and tissues.
