Saturday, November 30

Houseplant Workshop and Plant Swap from 1 to 3 p.m. at Fumo Family Library, 2437 S. Broad St. Learn the do’s and don’ts of plant care. Presented by Donna Williams, moderator of Philly Plant Guy.

Small Business Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Bok Market, 1901 S. 9th St.  Vendors include Stover Ceramics, Remark Glass, Bevy of Objects, Franklin and Whitman, Evening Star Gallery, Nuance LLC, Sabbatical Beauty, MacGregor-Art, Echo Metals, Lobo Mau, b.ross, Carol Stamper Art, Chuck Morris Ceramics, The Tiny Jeweler, Caitlin McCormack, Night Shift Studio, Rider Ceramics, People Pet Portraits and Irwin’s (opening at 4 p.m.) 

Sunday, December 1 

South Street Tree Lighting from 4 to 6 p.m. at 2nd and Lombard. Celebrate the spirit of the season as South Street Headhouse District presents the annual Winter Wonderland at the Historic Headhouse Shambles on 2nd Street. Free admission. Come out and celebrate SSHD’s finest holiday traditions. Santa Claus will arrive on a firetruck, then he will greet children and collect their wish lists. Parents should bring their own cameras for photos with Santa. Music, treats and gift shopping will also be part of the event. CBS 3’s Kimberly Davis will help Santa countdown to the official lighting of the tree at 5 p.m.  SSHD, CBS 3 and The CW Philly 57 will collect unwrapped toys for children in the region through the Salvation Army. Look for collection bins under the Shambles during the event. 

Monday, December 2

Pyramid of Lights from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Cianfrani Park, 746 Fitzwater St. Join us for a Bella Vista tradition, hot chocolate and a treat. Come out with your neighbors and celebrate all the hard work that has gone into keeping the park beautiful. Santa will also be making an appearance. Enjoy live music courtesy of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Jen Montone. Santa will arrive to light the Pyramid of Lights and visit with children.

Enjoy caroling and a cookie decorating station.

Wednesday, December 4 

Get Covered. ACA Insurance Enrollment Event from 4 to 7 p.m. at Whitman Library, 200 Snyder Ave. Do you need help buying or renewing your federal health insurance?

Come for free enrollment services. Certified enrollment specialists will be able to walk you through the best and most affordable coverage through the Affordable Care Act or Medicare. This event is free and open to the public. For ACA enrollment, make sure to bring documentation to verify your annual income (a W-2 or pay stub) and a driver’s license or other government-issued ID. Lights Around the World from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Donatucci Library, 1935 Shunk St. The Geography Lady presents Lights Around the World. Join the library as it takes a trip around the world to discover how different countries and cultures use light to celebrate. Pictures, stories, sensory crafts, snacks and more await.

St. Edmond Choir’s Christmas Concert, “A Night of Carols,” at 7 p.m. at St. Edmond’s Church, 2130 S. 21st St. This event includes free admission and ample parking. 

East Passyunk Tree Lighting from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tasker Street and Passyunk Avenue. East Passyunk Avenue BID and Passyunk Avenue Revitalization Corporation invite you to kick off the holidays at the Annual East Passyunk Christmas Tree Lighting. Come out with neighbors and friends for an evening filled with holiday music from Alphabet Academy Child Care, Andrew Jackson School HOME rock band and more. CBS 3 Philly meteorologist Lauren Casey will be emcee. Count down with her as she helps light the official Christmas tree around the singing fountain. Bring an unwrapped new toy for Lauren to bring back to CBS 3 and The CW Philly 57 for their annual Toy Fest holiday drive. You can also donate $10 to the cause by texting JOY to 41444. Message and data rates apply. Santa Claus will help spread holiday cheer and be on hand to take photos with the children.

Rep. Fiedler’s Holiday Party and Open House from 5 to 8 p.m. at  2400 S. 9th St.

Stop by for holiday cheer, South Philly treats and answers to your government-related questions. Santa will be making an appearance from 6 to 7 p.m. 

Crayola: Moved by Math from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Whitman Library, 200 Snyder Ave. Family Academy Courses & Training presents “Crayola: Moved by Math.” Making kids love math is a challenge to most parents. Math is a skill that takes a lot of brain power to master, and this can be experienced by kids as hard work. In this workshop, participants discover art-inspired strategies that bring large numbers and math expressions to life. Participants will receive a Crayola math kit to take home, which includes art supplies, a family engagement guide and three visual, easy-to-use, project-based, age-appropriate activities. This free workshop includes dinner, childcare (with pre-registration) and language interpretation (upon request). Learn more and register at www.philasd.org/face/FACT.

Spanish Storytime/Hora de cuentos en español from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Charles Santore Library, 932 S. 7th St. Bring the whole family to the library to share stories, rhymes and songs. The program is intended for preschool children.

Saturday, December 7

St. Monica Cash Bingo at St. Monica Senior School Gym, 16th and Shunk. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Games start at 6:30 p.m. A table of eight can be reserved. $25 per person includes three cards for each 10 rounds, dessert and coffee. Attendees are welcome to bring food and drink. 50/50 and special bingo rounds. Must be at least 18 years old to play. Tickets on sale at the rectory. Rectory hours are Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are also available at the door.

Can You Händel It? East Passyunk Pop Up Choir from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Singing Fountain, East Passyunk Avenue and Tasker Street. Join a pop-up choral performance of George Frideric Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus from his 1741 oratorio, Messiah, on East Passyunk Avenue. Together, the group will learn Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus and other carols, accompanied by live musicians. Participation by the general public is open and encouraged. No experience is necessary. Everyone free to participate. The group will be using the Schirmer Edition of Handel’s Messiah. Bring your own score or print out your own copies, as printed copies will be limited. Santa visits the Library & Holiday Craft Bazaar from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Donatucci Library, 1935 Shunk St. Join the Friends of the Donatucci Library as they host Santa Claus and a holiday craft bazaar at the Donatucci Library. There will be holiday storytimes, crafts, gift baskets, refreshments and holiday music.

“Dean and Friends” at The Waterfall Room, 2015 South Water Street. Doors open at 6 p.m. Buffet Dinner starts at 7 p.m. Show begins at 8:30 p.m. Enjoy this combined Christmas party and fundraiser to benefit the South Philadelphia Lions Club charities. Lions will be selling a 50/50 drawing, as well as, tickets for a basket drawing. Reservations are a must. Please call (215) 336-3932. Tickets cost $65.

True Gospel Tabernacle Church’s Annual Christmas Bazaar and Flea Market from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1912 S. 16th St. (TGT Daycare South) Fellowship Hall, second floor. Monday, December 16

Winter Solstice Celebration from 6 to 7:45 p.m. at the South Philly Library, 1700 S. Broad St. Come relax and celebrate with the Friends of the South Philadelphia Library. Meet your neighbors, enjoy refreshments, make a holiday craft and listen to live music. Interfaith Philadelphia will be honoring the library as a Zone of Peace. The library will also be collecting new, unused, brand-name items for hygiene kits, including baby wipes, liquid soap and tissues.

Tuesday, December 17 

Frosty Fest from 11 a.m. to noon at the South Philadelphia Library, 1700 S. Broad St. Celebrate the season with a winter storytime, festive crafts and activities. Families of all ages are welcome. Groups can contact the children’s librarian at 215-685-1866 for an appointment.
