Gas mains will be replaced along several streets in the Graduate Hospital neighborhood starting next week, which will impact parking situations, according to Philadelphia Gas Works.
Work is expected to begin on May 25, and the replacement of new gas mains will be performed on 11 streets.
The pipeline improvement project replaces and upgrades the aging natural gas infrastructure of the city, installing polyethylene or steel pipes underneath the street surface.
Crews will dig trenches along identified streets, which will include the 800 blocks of South 18th, 19th and 20th streets as well as the 900 blocks of South 20th and 21st streets. The project also includes the 1800, 2000 and 2100 blocks of Montrose Street; the 1700 and 1900 blocks of Christian Street; and the 1800 block of Webster Street.
The entirety of the project is expected to take 11 months.
A smaller portion of the project was scheduled to begin last week in the Passyunk Square neighborhood affecting the 700 block of Tasker Street, the 800 block of Greenwich Street and the 1500 block of S. 8th Street.
Construction is expected to wrap up there by Sept. 8, according to PGW’s website.
According to PGW, parking restrictions will be posted when streets are expected to temporarily close during hours of operation (Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.). Trenches and holes will be covered and all equipment will be stored out of the way at the end of each work day.
After new mains are installed, service lines into properties will need to be replaced. A PGW representative will contact residents directly before this phase begins.
PGW had limited some construction in accordance with Gov. Tom Wolf’s initial COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, which have since been amended to allow construction.
According to a release from PGW, crews will strictly follow all state and federal safety guidelines to reduce exposure to and the spread of COVID-19. Crew will wear enhanced personal protective equipment and will practice social distancing when PGW employees enter customers’ homes.
