Giardello remembered in South Philly

Fans, family and Philadelphia boxing community members gathered last week to celebrate  Joey Giardello’s 90th birthday.

Giardello, a former Middleweight Champion, passed away 12 years ago but would have turned 90 on July 16.

Born, Carmine Orlando Tilelli, the great boxer lived most of his life in East Passyunk Crossing.

Giardello was inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame, the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame. His career record was 101 wins, 25 losses and 7 draws.

The birthday celebration took place at the Giardello Statue at Passyunk and Mifflin Streets. Gatherers marked the occasion with a small tribute and a boxing glove-shaped cake. (Photo by Jim Jenkins).
