Community dining coming to Point Breeze

Newlyweds Michael and Angela Sultan plan on making their first wedding anniversary grand — as in a grand opening.

The couple has chosen the Point Breeze section of South Philadelphia as the location of celebration as they will open a new restaurant exactly one year from the day they were married on Sept. 14.

A new gastropub and restaurant called “Community” is set to open on the corner of 21st and Federal streets at the former Burg’s Hideaway Lounge.

“We are industry vets,” Michael Sultan said. “With the added experience of operating our catering company, we have the ability to offer a wide variety of dishes while also offering an assortment of scratch-made provisions. Community will be a one-stop shop for our Point Breeze neighbors.”

Community will be a dinner-only corner bar, which can accommodate up to 40 guests outside until indoor dining restrictions are fully lifted. Once that occurs, the inside will welcome another 30 guests via newly renovated half-dozen booths. It will also offer wrap-around bar seating.

On Thursday, the city announced that indoor dining will be permitted under specific restrictions starting on Sept. 8. Along with social distancing and mask wearing, other restrictions prohibit more than 25 percent capacity inside the restaurant and no more than four diners per table.

Alcohol can be served only for on-premises consumption when in the same transaction as a meal. A full list of restrictions can be found on the city’s website.

“We are announcing this change now in order to give restaurant operators sufficient time to prepare,” said Dr. Thomas Farley, Philadelphia health commissioner. “However, we move forward with an abundance of caution. Between now and Sept. 8, should we witness an increase in the rate of COVID-19 case counts in Philadelphia, we will reconsider whether this change is still viable.”

Given the green light, the owners of Community appear to have the opportunity to hit the ground running, albeit with restrictions. With a background in local restaurants, it shouldn’t be tough to get up to speed.

Michael and Angie are the owners of 33rd Street Hospitality catering in the East Falls section of the city and the 33rd Street Taco Shop, which operates out of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Michael, a Northeast Philly native, was previously one of the partners behind Revolution Taco, which opened on Walnut Street in 2015. Before that, he operated two food trucks called Street Food Philly and Taco Mondo in the city.

Angie is also familiar to the Philly restaurant scene, having worked at Rouge, Loco Pez and Underground Arts. The married couple is eager to showcase what they’ve learned around the city to their new Point Breeze neighbors.

“We are super excited to introduce our food to the neighborhood, and hope that the community will enjoy what we have to offer,” Angela Sultan said. “We put a huge emphasis on variety and worked hard to create a menu that we would want to enjoy at a neighborhood bar.”

Specialties will include a dry-aged bacon double cheeseburger, tacos, po’ boys, pot pie, chicken-fried rabbit legs, wings and a number of inspired sandwiches, salads and entrees.

There will also be seasonal items as well as vegan and vegetarian options. Alfresco grilling, collaborated by local chefs on Wednesday nights, figures to be a big draw.

One of the main attractions will be a beverage program that will feature a variety of local and non-local draft beers and ciders.

“We’re going to serve the best beers, wines, ciders and spirits that we can source,” Angela said.

An extensive drink menu will include West Coast IPAs, stouts, sours and ciders, along with three draft wines and prosecco, which will be available by the glass or carafe. There will also be a slushie machine for fun frozen cocktails, and a focus on locally produced craft spirits.
