New casino hiring hospitality positions

The building is growing closer to completion, and the Live! Casino & Hotel in South Philadelphia is looking to expand its family.

The new establishment began reviewing resumes after hosting a well-attended job fair at Xfinity Live! on an unseasonably mild afternoon on Nov. 10. About 300 full-time and part-time hospitality jobs are up for grabs as the casino expects to open in early 2021. Staff being sought during this round of hiring were primarily restaurant workers for the multiple entities that plan to begin serving customers very soon.

“We’re a family-owned business, and an extension of our family will be all the team members that we are out here looking for today,” said Joe Billhimer, executive vice president, Cordish Gaming Group. “So far it’s been an exceptional group of people that have come out.”

Some jobs were offered on the spot. Many more workers are still being sought through the coming months.

Even if residents missed the job fair, they haven’t missed out on the opportunity. Interested job seekers can still apply inside Broad Street Bullies at Xfinity Live! on Pattison Avenue, as a job recruitment center will be open inside the restaurant on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with recruiters available to assist with online applications and answer questions about the hiring process. A bank of computers is also available free of charge for job seekers. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can be made by emailing talentphilly@livech.com.

Interested job seekers can also apply for jobs from the comfort of their own home by registering online at WorkAtLivePhilly.com.

Positions currently looking to be filled are in the hospitality field, including cocktail servers, bartenders, food servers, line/prep cooks, stewards, bussers, bar porters and hosts. Experience in the food industry is welcomed but not entirely necessary.

“We’re looking for people that may not even have experience but have a fun demeanor and are excited about hospitality,” said Bill Mikus, VP of human resources. “That’s what we’re about. We cherish our guests. We want to make sure we have a clean, safe place and fast, friendly and fun service.”

Although the casino has yet to announce an official opening date, some jobs will begin before the grand opening to begin training. Many more jobs will become available once the casino is in full swing.

We’ll begin looking and start focusing on different positions at different times,” Billhimer said. “We’re looking for some good local residents. So far we’ve seen a good representation here from South Philly. It’s been a nice representation of the local market.”

Mikus said the casino is happy to be offering jobs during a time when many local people faced layoffs and furloughs due to COVID-19.

“It’s a tough time of year and a tough time in general for people,” Mikus said. “We want to celebrate the fact that we are new to Philly and we have job opportunities for people in Philadelphia, so we’re excited for the opportunity to engage people and bring them out. This is an opportunity that is very few and far between nowadays.”
