Celebrate Joey Giardello on Friday

This year’s Joey Giardello birthday memorial tribute schedule has been released and will be in four parts. At the annual event, people pay homage to the beloved South Philly boxer on his birthday, July 16. This year’s event not only remembers Giardello on what would have been his 91st birthday, but celebrates the 10-year anniversary of his statue.

The statue, at East Passyunk Avenue and Mifflin Street, will be cleaned Friday at 10 a.m.

At 12:30 p.m., at Stogie Joe’s Tavern (1801 E. Passyunk Ave.), once the site of the “Passyunk Gym” where Giardello trained, there will be a raffle for the book Joey. To be entered in this free raffle, email your name and contact information to FreddyDruding@gmail.com and place “Joey” in the subject line.

From 6-7 p.m. at the statue, Fred Druding Jr. and John DiSanto of PhillyBoxingHistory.com will be available for a Q&A on Giardello.

At 7:30 p.m. at the BYOB restaurant Scannicchios Italiano (2500 S. Broad St.), family, friends and fans of Giardello will gather to celebrate over an authentic five-course Italian dinner. Tickets for the dinner are $55 and includes tax and gratuity.
