The Neumann-Goretti High School girls volleyball team was defeated by Archbishop Ryan in straight sets on Oct. 14.

The Saints battled hard while missing a few regulars from the roster and dropped to 1-8 in Philadelphia Catholic League play.

“I think our team tries as hard as it can,” junior Alexa Vivanco said. “It’s just a lot of times, we have minor errors that we haven’t been able to fix yet. But at the end of the day and at the end of each game, we all come together and work as a team and get pretty close. But we have a lot of fun out there.”

The Saints face Archbishop Carroll and Cardinal O’Hara to finish up their Catholic League slate.

In other high school volleyball action last week, the Academy at Palumbo ran into some tough competition last week and its impressive win streak against Philadelphia Public League opponents came to an end. The Griffins were defeated by Central, 3-1, and lost a tight 3-2 match to undefeated George Washington. Palumbo was perfect in Public League play last season (11-0) and had won its first seven conference matches this year before suffering the setback. The Griffins are 7-2 in the Public League heading into the final week of conference play.

The High School for Creative and Performing Arts avenged a rare loss with back-to-back wins last week. CAPA defeated Science Leadership Academy, 3-0, before taking down William Bodine, 3-2. The Pegasus have now won seven of their last eight games and are 7-3 on the year.

Horace Furness took a set against Science Leadership Academy, but fell 3-1 in the match. The Falcons are now 1-8.

Audenried finished its week with a split, which included a win over Constitution and a five-set loss to School of the Future. The Rockets are 3-5 on the season.

Prep Charter took a 5-0 loss to Science Leadership Academy and now has a record of 0-3-1.

The Academy at Palumbo picked up its fourth straight win with a 2-0 victory over Southern. The Griffins have outscored their opponents 21-2 during their four-game winning streak and have risen above .500 (5-4 record) for the first time this season. Southern played its first game since Sept. 24 and had won three of four before COVID protocol interrupted its schedule.

Furness evened its record at 5-5 on the year after securing a 4-2 victory over William Bodine on Friday. The Falcons have won three games in a row.
