High School Sports Roundup 10/25

The Academy at Palumbo High School football team rallied for a 38-26 victory over Vaux Big Picture High School on Thursday night at the South Philly Super Site.

The Griffins trailed 12-8 at halftime before honoring their seniors during the break. Palumbo came out of the locker room and outscored the Cougars, 30-14, over the next 24 minutes. The Griffins have now won three straight games.

In other football news, Neumann-Goretti clinched the Philadelphia Catholic League Blue Division title after a 30-6 victory over Cardinal O’Hara on Friday. The Saints (6-0 division, 7-1 overall) have won six in a row and will face West Catholic on Saturday at home in the regular season finale.

South Philadelphia High School captured a 42-0 victory over Kipp Dubois in its most lopsided victory of the season. Sharif Ali rushed 14 times for 112 yards and scored two touchdowns to pace the Rams (3-4). They next face Belmont Charter School at home on Thursday.

Boys Soccer

Southern defeated George Washington Carver Engineering, 2-1, on Oct. 20 to raise its record to 4-3 on the season.

Furness was upended, 3-2, by Abraham Lincoln to drop the Falcons to 5-6 on the season.

Girls Soccer

Southern defeated Constitution, 3-0, in the opening round of the playoffs early in the week. Quarterfinal results against Franklin Towne Charter were not available.

Volleyball

The Academy at Palumbo got back on the winning track with straight-set victories over Creative and Performing Arts and Julia Masterman. Palumbo is 9-2 in the Public League and 9-4 overall. 

CAPA’s loss to the Griffins was followed by a sweep by undefeated Northeast. The Pegasus are 7-5 through the weekend.

Audenried lost 3-0 to Freire Charter on Wednesday to drop to 3-6 on the season.

Southern defeated Furness 3-0 to collect its third win of the season. The Rams are 3-6 while Furness is now 1-11.

Neumann-Goretti finished its PCL schedule with 3-0 losses to divisional powerhouses Archbishop Carroll and Cardinal O’Hara. The Saints finished 1-9 in the PCL standings.
