Neumann-Goretti advances to state semifinal

A day after shutting out Southern High School on Thanksgiving, the Neumann-Goretti High School football team blanked Danville, 28-0 in the quarterfinal round of the PIAA Class 3A playoffs.

The Saints (13-1) were led by Shawn Battle who scored on runs of six and 17 yards to give Neumann-Goretti a two-score lead early in the second quarter. Shortly after halftime, the Saints extended their lead as Jayden Sumpter ran 42 yards for another score. Jayden Styles punched in the final Saints touchdown from seven yards out. Neumann-Goretti earned its fourth shutout of the season and second in less than 48 hours. The District 12 champion Saints will face undefeated District 3 winners Wyomissing Area (14-0) in the semifinal round this weekend at a site to be determined.
