Letter to the Editor: Happy Holidays on East Passyunk

It gave me great pleasure to read Mark Zimmaro’s report on holiday plans for my beloved, lifelong neighborhood (“Holiday cheer on East Passyunk Ave.,” Dec. 1). I especially want to give a high five to my neighbor and good friend, Adam Leiter, who runs the East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District, for all his invaluable work in refreshing our neighborhood, even during these challenging times.

By the time this letter is published, we will have already experienced the joyful Christmas tree-lighting ceremony at our Singing Fountain complete with photos with Santa Claus – all part of the “Deck the Ave.” events planned for this holiday season.

And special thanks to Mark for reporting and reminding us of other happenings at the Fountain like the Menorah lighting for Hanukkah as well as other special events and sidewalk sales all along the Avenue throughout December.

It does not surprise me to see tour guides taking out-of-town visitors along this thriving business and fun corridor. I met one such guide recently talking to a group of people from out of state at our decorated Fountain. I even offered to share some of my personal memories of growing up on the 1600 block of the Avenue. The guide learned a few things, I am sure.

Adam Leiter is right that this historic area has become a “destination” where people can ” … make memories that will last a lifetime.” I know from personal experience that I have so many precious memories after spending my entire life in this neighborhood.

And let me finish by extending special wishes for success to all the old and new businesses that have opened up along the Avenue. May every friend, neighbor, vendor and visitor enjoy a happy and healthy holiday season.
