Play on Philly announced that it is seeking applications for its Marian Anderson Young Artist Program, a tuition-free musical studies program for students in grades 3-11 from the Philly area that will begin in June.
Named after the legendary South Philly-born vocalist, the program aims to serve young people in communities that have not been afforded opportunities to break into the highest levels of musical professions. Participants will have access to various resources and support, including music instruction, mentorships and networking with professional musicians.
“The Marian Anderson Young Artist Program continues (Anderson’s) legacy of mentorship and advocacy for young artists who did not have access to training or performance opportunities,” POP said in a press release.
The program is part of POP’s recent acquisition of the Marian Anderson Award, which recognized the humanitarian work and philanthropic support of artists who positively impacted society. POP said the award in its new format will now focus on “renewing the award’s commitment to young artists.”
Program participants will receive individualized support plans that cater to their specific talents and interests. Weekly private lessons, instrument loans, group and solo performances, and college and career counseling will be offered to program members.
All students who have some experience in instrumental or vocal performance are welcome to apply. Students in grades 4-8 can apply to be an “Apprentice,” while students in grades 8-11 who are committed to pursuing music in college can apply to be a “Scholar.” An annual participation fee of $115 is also required.
