Saints march out of Hershey with 2 state titles

Neumann-Goretti High School doubled its pleasure by winning both boys and girls state championships in basketball.

On March 24, the Neumann-Goretti boys basketball team captured the PIAA Class 4A State Championship on Thursday with a 93-68 victory over previously undefeated Quaker Valley High School at the GIANT Center in Hershey.

Aamir Hurst led a group of five scorers who reached double figures with 20 points while Robert Wright added 16 and Bruce Smith contributed 14. Neumann-Goretti also received contributions from Khaafig Myers (10 points) and Sultan Adewale (10 points, seven rebounds).

The Saints’ ninth state championship and first since 2018. It was also the first time Neumann-Goretti won a Class 4A title as all others came in the Class 3A bracket. The Philadelphia Catholic League champion Neumann-Goretti Saints finished 23-4 on the season.

On March 26, the girls made it 2-for-2 by defeating Freedom Area, 55-49, in the Class 3A championship behind a 32-point effort from senior Mihjae Hayes. The Saints led 22-21 at halftime and pushed the lead to 38-34 heading into the final quarter.

The girls team won its first state championship since 2018, when they won their fourth straight title. The girls team finished 17-9 on the season.
