Letter to the Editor: Let’s give Ukraine military weapons

When Ukraine President Zelenskyy begged Congress for help to fight the Russian invasion in his country, the Biden administration offered humanitarian aid, questionable sanctions against Russia and some military aid. What Zelensky continues to ask for is heavy military weapons and the MiG-29 fighter jets. Biden refuses to give Zelensky the fighter jets. It is futile to play a game of semantics over which weapons are considered “offensive” and which ones are  deemed “defensive.” If Ukraine can’t control the skies, they can’t win the war.

President Zelenskyy is not a dog begging for bones, he is the president of a sovereign country begging for fighter jets and adequate weapons to defeat a powerful bloodthirsty despot whose military forces have committed massacres and genocide against the Ukrainian people. Why should we help Ukraine and give Zelenskyy the fighter jets he needs? Is it because towns like Bucha became a killing factory with civilians left dead by strangulation and torture and found in barrels and basements? Is it because women and children have been found mutilated and raped with one woman having a swastika carved into her stomach?

Where would we be today if we didn’t rescue the Jews from the claws of Hitler during World War II?

Where will we be tomorrow, if we don’t help rescue Ukrainians today from the claws of President Putin? America should not have “boots on the ground” and “no fly zone” but we can give Ukraine weapons to take down the Russian lions who are devouring the Ukrainians. Sanctions against Russia are worthless, and claims of war crimes are toothless until we send in the fighter jets and the heavy weapons that Zelenskyy has been asking for since the start of this war. It’s time we start listening to him.
