Following an extended break due to the coronavirus pandemic, Earlie Bird Productions will be premiering its first production since 2019 at Philly PACK on Thursday, May 19, with additional showings on May 20 and 21, at 8 p.m.

The production, titled The Loneliness Project and performed by a cast of Philly-based performers, will be exploring feelings of loneliness through a series of vignettes that will take viewers into the internet, under the sea and various other scenarios.

“What we’ve created is an immersive theater experience exploring a topic that is simultaneously universal and solitary,” said Joanna Nowak, a production designer and photographer for the production, in a press release. “Like so many creatives, the past few years left me starved for collaboration. Designing and creating for The Loneliness Project has been truly rewarding; an elixir for the very subject we’re tackling.”

Lauren Leonard, the founder of EBP who will also be directing the project, said she first came up with the idea for the project while reading CONSOLATIONS: The Solace, Nourishment and Underlying Meaning of Everyday Words by David Whyte. She said she was inspired by his opinions on loneliness, in particular the line, “I am alone; therefore, I belong.”

“Whyte approaches words and the experiences they provoke with curiosity and a sense of possibility,” Leonard said. “That line is a summation, I think, of our pandemic experience and the experience of theater as a whole.”

Other members of the collaborative team include contributing writer Kirsten Humbert, playwright Monica Flory and Todd Ogren, keyboardist for the Grammy-nominated rock band Rival Sons, which composed the score for the production.

Leonard said that a portion of the proceeds generated from the project will be donated to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund.
