It’s not too late to dine under the shambles this summer.
Every Thursday through Sunday, the South Street Headhouse District closes the southbound lane of 2nd Street between Lombard and Pine to make room for on-street and outdoor dining.
It’s called “Dining Under the Shambles” and it takes place from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Residents can enjoy the warm weather while sampling some of Philadelphia’s best foods.
Five restaurants are taking part in the event: Bistro Romano, Pizzeria Stella, Bloomsday Cafe, Xochiti and Malbec Argentinean Steakhouse.
The South Street Headhouse District organized the event in the spring of 2020 after the city placed restrictions on indoor dining during the pandemic. Dining Under the Shambles was created to help small businesses navigate the restrictions and avoid closure due to a lack of business. Once indoor dining was permitted again in December, 2021 the Headhouse District took a break from Dining Under the Shambles. But customers wanted it back, so it returned earlier this summer to the enjoyment of patrons.
It takes place at the Historic Shambles, which originated as a marketplace in 1745, where merchants could sell goods outdoors to local residents. Later, in the early 1800s, the Headhouse was built to house a fire engine, which included a loud bell that signaled the start of the market every Sunday. It is now home to farmer’s markets, weddings, special events and outdoor dining.
Dining Under the Shambles will run through Oct. 30.
