New gallery opens at Magic Gardens Sept. 9

We’re on the Move: Paintings by Ashanté Kindle & Khari Turner opens in the galleries at Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, 1020 South St., on Sept. 9. The display of experimental paintings will be on view until Dec. 4.

Ashanté Kindle and Khari Turner explore culture and generational lineage through personal narratives in their paintings. In We’re on the Move, Kindle and Turner use joyful imagery and colors to display the importance of play and freedom in the Black community. Turner paints young Black people expressing their freedom through bike riding, gathering together and finding joy as they are coming of age. Kindle explores themes of healing and prosperity by celebrating Black hair in her work. Collectively, the works of Kindle and Turner intertwine the past and present through abstraction and figurative paintings.

A pay-what-you-wish opening reception will be held on Sept. 9, from 6-9 p.m. with complimentary light refreshments, while drinks will be available for purchase. Kindle and Turner will also host a Tour & Talk at Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens on Sept. 13.
