April 5

Rising Voices 2 Opening Reception – from 5-8 p.m. at Studio Incamminati on the 7th floor of the Bok Building, 1901 S. 9th St., over 40 realist paintings by some of the nation’s most promising women artists.

The exhibition features the finalists for the 2021 Bennett Prize, a major national competition for women realist painters, and a solo exhibition of the work of Aneka Ingold, winner of the 2019 Bennett Prize.

One of the nation’s top ateliers for contemporary realist painting, the faculty of Studio Incamminati teach the skills that unlock figurative realist art’s capacity to tell stories and to address the human condition in all its complexity.

This free exhibition presents a special opportunity for the young women of Philadelphia to take inspiration from a cast of talented female role models. The exhibition will be on view at Studio Incamminati through May 14.

April 6

Opening Day Baseball – At Xfinity Live! For the Phillies’ first home game of the season, the Opening Day Party will feature live entertainment with Stealing Savannah, acoustic performances in PBR Philly, multiple DJs, trivia, giveaways and much more. The pre-game party will begin at 11 a.m. with the game Phillies vs. Cincinnati Reds starting at 3:05 p.m.

April 8

Rex Manning Day – from noon to 7 p.m., all are invited to celebrate the cult classic Rex Manning Day on South Street with South Street Art Mart, MilkBoy and Repo Records. From the 1995 film Empire Records, this year’s Rex Manning Day offers a free block party at 4th and South streets with live music, food from Puyero Venezuelan Flavor, local vendors, prizes and more. Crash Bang Boom, Just Gifts n’ Vibes (formerly Paper Moon), Philly AIDS Thrift, Queen & Rook Game Cafe and Worm’s Emporium will also be joining in the fun. Costumes are encouraged, so if you need some new-to-you ‘90s flair, shop secondhand, vintage and thrift on South Street. April 8

Major League Wrestling – At the 2300 Arena, 2300 S. Swanson St. See Battle Riot V as 40 wrestlers will compete in Philly as one combatant looks to outlast 39 others and earn a world title shot anytime, anywhere against Alex Hammerstone. Philadelphia wrestling legend Raven returns to the 2300 Arena, which famously housed the ECW in the 1990s. Tickets starting at $15 available at MLW2300.com and the 2300 Arena box office.

April 9

Easter Promenade – South Street’s Easter Promenade will return for its 90th year. Attendees can expect classic traditions like the Best Dressed Contest and free bunny ears as well as new traditions including Instagrammable photo-ops with Mr. and Mrs. Cottontail and Grand Marshal Henri David, circus performers, live musicians and free candy. The Promenade kicks off at 12:30 p.m. at 5th and South streets, and ends at the Headhouse Plaza at 2nd and Lombard streets where the Best Dressed Contest starts.

April 11

Origami For All – at 4:30 p.m. at the Whitman Library, 200 Snyder Ave., instructor Jill Saull creates many types of Origami Models in this fun, interactive program. This program is appropriate for all populations. If weather permits, this program will be held outside in back of the library.

April 12

Guided sunset kayak at FDR – At 6:30 pm., take a guided sunset kayak at FDR Park. As the only park with publicly accessible lakes and an active boating program, FDR is the perfect spot to get back out on the water after a long winter. At this monthly program, Fairmount Park Conservancy partners with experienced guides from Discovery Pathways who teach about the lakes’ history and wildlife as we kayak under the glow of the setting sun.

April 12

Snakes Alive! – at 4:30 at the Whitman Library, 200 Snyder Ave. Join us for a fun, interactive presentation of live snakes (all harmless) from around the world! Snake expert Scott Prior will share information on snake types, habits, care and conservation, and help dispel any negativity surrounding this fascinating species. If you’re brave enough you may be able to hold one! This all-ages program will be held in the library’s meeting room.

April 12

James Forten Biographer – Author and historian Dr. Julie Winch will join the Museum of the American Revolution for a special presentation at 6:30 p.m., reflecting on her groundbreaking biography A Gentleman of Color: The Life of James Forten, more than 20 years after it was first published. The event is part of the Museum’s popular Read the Revolution Speaker Series.

April 14

The Anomalous Saxophone Quartet – at 3:30 p.m. at the Whitman Library, 200 Snyder Ave. The Anomalous Saxophone Quartet plays fun, creative, original jazz arrangements of material from artists as varied as Lee Morgan, The Beatles, and Tears for Fears. The group features Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone saxophone as well as drum set and percussion. Free event.

April 15

Summit on Philly’s Refinery Redevelopment – From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Audenried High School, 3301 Tasker St., a citywide summit on Philly’s refinery redevelopment, featuring more than a dozen interactive workshops, panels and community visioning sessions. Learn about the many issues this historic redevelopment touches — from the cleanup of the refinery land, flood-prevention plans and risks of warehousing to winning jobs for longtime residents and possibilities for community reinvestment. Youth Football Day – From 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the FDR Park Boathouse Lawn, Fairmount Park Conservancy, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and local leaders will celebrate Philadelphia’s youth football community with a free, family-friendly event featuring football activities for children, kayak tours, food, face painting, balloon artist and music. The public is invited to participate in this free, fun day. A brief speaking program will highlight the FDR Park Plan, which features high-quality athletic fields and courts interspersed with nature trails, woodlands, meadows and creeks. Filament at Gloria Dei Church – At 4 p.m. Come enjoy beautiful music from the 17th century inside Historic Gloria Dei (Old Swedes’) Church, 916 S. Swanson St. Filament, a chamber music baroque ensemble, will play “From the Source” in one of its favorite venues.

For this special program, Filament will interpret never-heard-before handwritten copies of unpublished 17th-century manuscripts. The result: a completely unique classical music experience.

Printmaking Workshop – From 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Whitman Library, 200 Snyder Ave. For Children 6 and up, teens and adults, Try your hand at printing on a portable letterpress! An artist from The Soapbox Community Print Shop (phillysoapbox.org) will show participants how to make unique handmade prints, posters, fliers, and postcards.

Leon Jordan Jr. and his Jazz Band – At 3:30 p.m. at the Whitman Library,  Another in a series of free jazz concerts sponsored by Musicians Union Local 77. Leon Jordan Jr. and his band will explore the music and artistry of Legendary Jazz trumpeter Miles Davis in a program entitled: “Miles on my Mind.”

April 22

Sandy Sprint Philadelphia 5K Run/Walk – at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the event will include the 5K Run/Walk, a Survivor Ceremony and live performances. All participants must pre-register. Registration fees are $40 for adults and $30 for children under 12. The Sandy Sprint supports women currently battling ovarian cancer, honors those who are survivors and raises funds to prevent future diagnoses.

April 27

Pours For Paws – From 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Top Tomato, 116 S. 11th St., Young Friends of PAWS is hosting its biggest fundraiser of the year. A two-hour open bar, pizza, appetizers, a silent auction and a raffle, all supporting the PAWS mission to make Philly a no-kill city. Rita Rudner at Live! – Comedian, actor and best-selling author Rita Rudner is making her debut at the Event Center at Live! Casino & Hotel Philadelphia. Rudner is known for her hilarious and epigrammatic one-liners. She’s won Las Vegas’ Comedian of the Year nine years in a row and received the Casino Entertainment Legend Award in October 2017.

Jerry Tanenbaum and his Jazz Band – At 3:30 p.m. at the Whitman Library, 200 Snyder Ave. Listen to musician Jerry Tanenbaum and his jazz band as they perform beautiful examples of jazz through the ages, with some explanation of why and how the styles evolved.

SPHS Class of ‘63 Reunion – The South Philadelphia High School Class of 1963 (January-June) will hold its 60th reunion from 1-4 p.m. at Adelphia Restaurant, 1750 Clements Bridge Road, Deptford, New Jersey. Tickets are $60 and include a buffet luncheon with a cash bar. South Street Fest – From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., the South Street Headhouse District will be hosting its annual South Street Fest. The theme is Crowns All Around, as Brauhaus Schmitz’s Maifest, the Kentucky Derby, and King Charles III’s coronation all take place on the same day as this year’s festival! From flower crowns to fascinators.

Catholic Charities Appeal at the Phillies – At 7:05 at Citizens Bank Park, Buy tickets for the Phillies game vs. the Chicago Cubs at https://www.mlb.com/phillies/tickets/specials/catholic-charities to support CCA beneficiary programs that provide support to ministries including Education; Social Services; Evangelization, Parish and Spiritual Life; Clergy; and Local Mission Activities. 3ICE North American Tour – At 1 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Center,, three-on-three professional North American ice hockey league makes a stop in South Philly. Each stop on the tour features four of the eight league teams, comprised of professional ice hockey players competing in three-on-three format for two eight-minute periods with a running clock. The single-elimination format includes two first-round games, a consolation match and a title game, for a total of four games each night. Individual tickets on sale at wellsfargocenterphilly.com.
