Rising Voices 2 Opening Reception – from 5-8 p.m. at Studio Incamminati on the 7th floor of the Bok Building, 1901 S. 9th St., over 40 realist paintings by some of the nation’s most promising women artists.

The exhibition features the finalists for the 2021 Bennett Prize, a major national competition for women realist painters, and a solo exhibition of the work of Aneka Ingold, winner of the 2019 Bennett Prize.

One of the nation’s top ateliers for contemporary realist painting, the faculty of Studio Incamminati teach the skills that unlock figurative realist art’s capacity to tell stories and to address the human condition in all its complexity.

This free exhibition presents a special opportunity for the young women of Philadelphia to take inspiration from a cast of talented female role models. The exhibition will be on view at Studio Incamminati through May 14.

Garden Party Happy Hour – From 5-8 p.m. at Magic Gardens, 1020 South St., enjoy a happy hour and crafting event in the colorful mosaicked wonderland. Popcorn and pretzels along with treats from Ramona Susan’s Bakeshop will also be offered. Mother’s Day Card Craft – At 4:30 at Whitman Library, this hands-on workshop, led by Dawn Rulli, participants will design and make their own Mother’s Day cards. Jeremy Winston Chorale – at 6:30 p.m. at the Museum of the American Revolution, a live musical experience presented by The Jeremy Winston Chorale and inspired by the Museum’s special exhibition, Black Founders: The Forten Family of Philadelphia. Featuring more than 20 Chorale members and led by composer and artistic director Jeremy Winston, the concert will celebrate the life of free black Philadelphian James Forten and explore Philadelphia’s rich musical history through storytelling and song. Onsite tickets include day-of pre-event access to Black Founders from 11 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. and access to a cash bar prior to the event. Sisterhood of the Varjo Dress – At 6:30 p.m. at the American Swedish Historical Museum. Design critic Alexandra Lange will give a virtual talk going beyond the aesthetic elements of Marimekko clothing by exploring the meaning their designs had for feminist icons. Her essays, reviews and profiles have appeared in numerous design publications. In this talk, inspired by her 2017 New Yorker article “Jane Jacobs, Georgia O’Keeffe and the Power of the Marimekko Dress,” Lange will offer a history of the artists, writers and designers who chose Marimekko as their uniform from the 1960s onward, describing how the dress designs aligned with their cultural politics and expanding opportunities for women. 3ICE North American Tour – At 1 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Center, three-on-three professional North American ice hockey league makes a stop in South Philly. Each stop on the tour features four of the eight league teams, comprised of professional ice hockey players competing in three-on-three format for two eight-minute periods with a running clock.
