Report underage drinking

Since 1998, Pennsylvanians Against Underage Drinking has had a hotline available to all citizens to help fight the number-one youth drug problem.

Like most issues, people pay attention when the problem hits close to home, like when there has been a recent tragedy in the community or when a loud party of drunken teens spills out of the house next door. Pennsylvanians Against Underage Drinking reminds citizens to think about the problem before it becomes a crisis.

The hotline number is 888-UNDER-21 (888-863-3721).

Services available for MR

If you live in Philadelphia and are looking for support for a person who is mentally retarded, the city has just made it easier to register for help.

Starting Monday, interested parties can call 215-686-0254 to get an appointment at the nearest mental retardation agency.

To be eligible for help, a person must: have an IQ of 70 or lower; need assistance due to limitations in at least three areas of daily living; have been diagnosed with retardation before age 22; and be a resident of the United States.

Applicants will be asked to bring documents with them to establish their eligibility.

Reading Terminal makes history

Reading Terminal and Market, which has been in operation since 1893, will be named a historical landmark Wednesday by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museums Commission.

The marker will be dedicated at noon at a public ceremony at 1113-33 Market St. — the landmark’s original entrance, now an entrance to the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

The historical marker program highlights people, places and events significant in state and national history.

For more information on the Reading Terminal dedication, call 215-922-2317 or visit www.readingterminalmarket.org.

Senior helpers needed

Can you spare as little as two to four hours a week? If you are 55 or older, you can make a contribution with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.

The program offers volunteer opportunities in hospitals, offices, museums and more. You could even be assigned to a tourist attraction such as the National Constitution Center or the Kimmel Regional Performing Arts Center.

For more information, call Lorna Carroll at 215-331-7787.
