The South Philadelphia High football team overpowered William Penn, 36-6, in a non-league game Friday at 11th and Bigler streets.
It marked the Rams’ first win since Oct. 24, 2002, when the team defeated University City, 14-6. William Penn is making its return to varsity competition after playing a junior-varsity schedule last season.
Junior running back Lamone Fox sparked Southern’s offense by racking up 187 rushing yards and scoring four of six touchdowns. Senior quarterback Jalil Harris rushed for a touchdown and completed a 44-yard scoring strike to senior receiver Mike McClain.
Today, the Rams will try to win their first league game since 2002 when they host 0-2 John Bartram at 3 p.m.
The 0-1 Bok Wildcats also open Public South Division play Saturday with a 10:30 a.m. home game against University City. The squad is coming off a 16-8 non-league loss to Martin Luther King.
In Catholic League action, the Ss. John Neumann-Maria Goretti Saints are looking for their first win after starting the season 0-2. The Saints will play Episcopal Academy at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in a non-league contest.
