Woman strangled

A black woman in her 30s was found strangled and partially nude on the 3100 block of South 23rd Street early yesterday, police said.

Discovered around 6:12 a.m., the woman had not been identified by press time.

Her blouse was pushed up and her pants down, Officer Jill Russell of the Police Public Affairs Unit said, adding it wasn’t known if she had also been sexually assaulted.

Medics pronounced her dead at 6:20 a.m.

Woman gunned down in car

A 21-year-old woman was gunned down while sitting in an SUV on the 2200 block of Jackson Street early yesterday.

The victim managed to get out and run towards 23rd Street and Snyder Avenue, where she collapsed in a pool of blood around 2:15 a.m., Lt. Steve Biello of South Detective Division said.

A medic took her to Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in good condition with gunshot wounds to her face, hand, arm and leg, Lt. Joe Dougherty of South Detectives’ Special Investigations Unit told the Review.

The SUV was recovered on the 1200 block of South 46th Street in Southwest Philly with the windows shot out, Biello said.

Police had no motive or suspects at press time.

Man charged with murder, arson

Four days after a man’s body was discovered in a burning Honda on the 1800 block of South Fourth Street near Sigel Street, police made an arrest.

On Jan. 6, Anthony Cameroto, 26, from the 2800 block of Smedley Street, was charged with murder, arson and related offenses, Officer Jill Russell of the Police Public Affairs Unit said.

Homicide Detective Angela Gaines, who is assigned to the case, would not release any information to the Review regarding how the suspect came to be arrested or a motive for the slaying.

Police discovered the body of Stephen Lasorsa, 25, from Broomall, at about 5:51 a.m. Jan. 2.

He had been shot in the head and was found in the passenger seat of the burning 2000 Honda.


Stabbed shooting hoops

After a 19-year-old was stabbed on a basketball court, he managed to make his way to a hospital.

The teen and an unknown man were shooting hoops at about 2:45 p.m. Monday on the 1300 block of Oregon Avenue when a verbal altercation broke out, Detective Joe Chiaro of South Detectives said.

The two started shoving each other, with one pulling a knife, police said.

Suffering from a stab wound to the left side of his back, the teen walked to Methodist Hospital and was then transferred to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in good condition.

Siblings arrested

Police arrested two siblings after they allegedly attacked each other – one with a knife and the other with a metal pipe.

The pair was feuding over a prior incident shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday when things turned violent, Detective Joe Chiaro of South Detectives said.

The 21-year-old woman allegedly knifed her brother in the chest, and the 20-year-old man allegedly grabbed a pipe and broke his sister’s arm, police said.

Both were taken to Jefferson Hospital in stable condition.

Shamsiddeen, 20, and Shadeen, 21, Johnson were each charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, possession of an instrument of crime and recklessly endangering another person.


Shooting victim found on street

Police found a shooting victim on the 2100 block of South Eighth Street early last Friday.

The 39-year-old, who had been shot in the stomach, was taken into surgery at Jefferson Hospital, Detective Joe Chiaro of South Detectives said. He was listed in stable condition at the time.

Investigators recovered no ballistics evidence at the scene of the 2:20 a.m. shooting.

Contractor robbed outside store

An armed man robbed a contractor outside of Home Depot, 1601 Columbus Blvd., Monday.

The offender rode up on a bicycle to the 29-year-old victim shortly after 11 a.m., pulled a gun and demanded money, Detective Joe Chiaro of South Detectives said.

The bandit took $3,300 and the man’s cell phone.

Benefit to be held for murder victim

A benefit will be held Jan. 20 in honor of an 19-year-old who was killed July 29, 2005.

The Michael Franzone Memorial Benefit will take place at Galdo’s, 20th Street and Moyamensing Avenue, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 and include a full buffet dinner and live DJ music. A cash bar will be available.

There will be $1, $5 and $10 raffles available, as well.

Proceeds will go toward scholarships at local schools, sponsorship of youth athletic teams and area improvements for children and young adults.

Franzone, a South Philly High graduate from the 2300 block of South 17th Street, was stabbed in the chest while trying to break up a fight between his friend and another young man across from St. Richard Church, 3010 S. 18th St., police said. The fight was over a girl, police said.

Jason Sannasardo, 20, from the 1000 block of Mollbore Terrace, was charged with Franzone’s murder.
