Boyfriend of slain victim charged

Almost seven months after the body of Taneke Daniels was discovered in New Jersey, a former boyfriend has been charged.

Glenn Hansen, 42, was charged Nov. 3 with murder and abuse of a corpse, Officer Elizabeth Skala of the Police Public Affairs Unit said.

Skala could not comment on what led police to Hansen.

Hansen was serving six to 23 months at the Bucks County Correctional Facility for "unsworn, false-written statements," Harris Gubernick, director of corrections at the Bucks County Department of Corrections, said, adding before being transferred to Philadelphia Police Headquarters last Friday, he had been detained at the Bucks County facility since Oct. 31.

Daniels was last seen leaving her mother Gail’s Grays Ferry home in May 2005. After the then-27-year-old went missing, Hansen told police she visited him at his apartment before a friend picked her up.

When Gail reported her daughter missing May 23, 2005, Daniels was scheduled to testify against Hansen in a domestic assault case.

April 2006, Daniels’ body was found, buried in a shallow grave, by a contractor in Woodland Township’s Brendan T. Byrne State Forest.

Fire Academy graduation

Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers administered the oath of office Nov. 6 to the 182nd Firefighter Cadet and the 24th Fire Service Paramedic classes. Eighty-five firefighters and 15 paramedics graduated at the academy, State Road and Pennypack Street.

This was only the second time in academy history where two classes ran simultaneously, Ayers said in a press release.

"The dual-class initiative has allowed us to fill more vacancies over a shorter period of time. I am very pleased with the results of this fine class of firefighters and I am equally happy to add these new paramedics to our department," the commissioner said.

Graduates will be assigned to fire stations throughout the city.

Arsonist still sought

Police continue to look for a man that torched a portion of a Girard Estate home Sept. 25.

A surveillance camera caught the perpetrator walking onto a porch on the 2500 block of Garnet Street shortly after 10 p.m. He poured a flammable liquid on the floor and ignited it with a lighter, South Detectives’ Special Investigations Unit Detective Jim Dunlap said.

Police were summoned after neighbors smelled what they believed was kerosene, the detective said. Witnesses saw the perpetrator run south on the 2400 block of Opal Street, one street west of Garnet.

Dunlap recovered the container used in the crime in a sewer by the home.

Investigators are trying to determine what type of accelerant was used.
