Alleged dealer nabbed

A 16-year-old produced a gun when police moved in to arrest him for alleged drug dealing on the 2700 block of Oakford Street, police said.

At about 10:15 p.m. Dec. 27, 17th District officers responded to a report of the teen allegedly pushing dope on that block, Detective Joe Chiaro of South Detective Division said.

When police approached, the youth ran. After a brief foot pursuit, officers caught up to him, at which point he pulled a handgun and pointed it at police, the detective said. An officer drew his firearm and ordered the teen to disarm, which he did by throwing the gun to the ground, police said.

When police took the teen into custody, they recovered a clear plastic bag of crack cocaine from his pants pocket and, on the ground at the scene, the loaded .40-caliber Smith & Wesson semi-automatic handgun, Chiaro said.

The suspect from the 2600 block of Oakford was charged with firearms violations, aggravated and simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, possession of an instrument of crime and possession of a controlled substance.

Violent Tuesday

Two teens were shot in unrelated incidents Tuesday night.

The first shooting happened at about 7:15 p.m. when a 19-year-old was walking on the 2900 block of Reed Street. He heard gunfire and realized he had been hit, Lt. Joe Dougherty of South Detective Division said, adding one bullet entered the victim’s left arm and traveled to the left side of his torso.

He was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in stable condition and police found seven .25-caliber casings at the scene.

At about 8 p.m., a 15-year-old was transported to Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical but stable condition with two wounds to his back after someone gunned him down as he walked out of Vare Recreation Center, 2600 Moore St. The victim heard the gunshots from behind, Dougherty said. A passing motorist drove the teen to the hospital.

Investigators recovered three 9mm spent casings outside Vare and a live round of the same caliber in the street in front of the rec center.

Detectives have no motives or suspects in either case, Dougherty said yesterday.
