Phillies hold blood drive

The Phillies are teaming up with the American Red Cross to host their fourth annual blood drive from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 16 at Citizens Bank Park. Parking is free at Lot S off Phillies Drive and near the Majestic Clubhouse Store.

Pre-registration at www.pleasegiveblood.org or 1-800-GIVE-LIFE is requested to donate. Anybody who donates receives an exclusive, limited-edition bobble figurine of MVP shortstop Jimmy Rollins.

Most healthy people who are at least age 17 and weigh 110 pounds or more are eligible to donate blood every 56 days. Sixteen-year-olds may donate with parental consent.


Brunson update

South Philly’s Tyrone "Young Gun" Brunson, the world-record holder for consecutive first-round knockouts, returns to the ring Aug. 15 to face Mexico’s Antonio Soriano in a scheduled six-round bout. Brunson, a middleweight fighter, will enter the ring a perfect 19-0 with all 19 victories coming via knockout. Soriano is 12-9-1 with nine knockouts.


High school football

Those driving past the 11th-and Bigler-streets sports complex might find the Bok and Southern football teams practicing. The two schools officially open their new home 10 a.m. Aug. 29 when they square off in a non-league contest.

Bok, the defending District 12 Class AAA champ, will drop to the Public League’s AA division in the fall as a result of enrollment numbers. Furness also is in the division with four other city schools, including Ben Franklin.
