What goes around …

While thrift store finds are becoming increasingly trendy, helping out others never goes out of style. In these parts, Goodwill is the place for bargain-hunting while shoppers and donors alike provide aid to local families, easily becoming everyone’s favorite thrift store.

Eighty-four percent of Goodwill’s revenue is used to fund employment, training and education programs, including its EmployAbility Institute, a career center that aids with job training, placement and education.

"We really work with the community and reach out to people who need the help," Yvonne A. Schmidt, manager of the 2200 W. Passyunk Ave. location, said.

This spot became an outlet in early 2007, selling clothing for $5 or less, as well as affordable household items.

Goodwill Fashions Etc. at 2601 S. Front St. is not an outlet, but Manager Sharon Marshall said some items are half-priced. Shoppers can find anything from books to clothes to pots and pans — usually for $10 or less.

Both locations accept donations.

Fabulous Finds sells top designs that won’t break the bank — and maybe will put some cash back in your pocket.

Style conscious

Shopping can be tough to say no to, especially when designer names are in the mix. While top-notch labels look great, the price tags can bring on sticker shock. Fabulous Finds sells the best for less and the readers agree, deeming it their favorite consignment shop. At these types of stores, customers give their items to the shop, receiving a percentage of the profit when the item it sold.

Mary Ann Ranina, Fabulous Finds owner for 14 years, takes great pride in her shop at 1535 S. Broad St. Sizes run from 0 to plus with designers such as Jones New York (with a blouse by the label going for $8) and Nine West hanging from the racks. Preschool fashionistas also can find name-brand goods on the racks.

"We’re very consistent with keeping the store full of nice, high-quality clothes," Ranina said.

The store’s jewelry is a finishing touch, as are its bags and shoes, making Fabulous Finds a one-stop shop for the perfect outfit.

"I think our customers keep returning not only because of the consistency of clothes, but the prices are also really great," Ranina said.

Goodwill came in second, while Greene Street Consignment hit the runway at third.
