A Point Breeze woman whacked a police officer in the face with her bag when the officer was trying to arrest another woman.

Police were alerted to a large fight on the 1900 block of South 22nd Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. As the crowd gathered, officers instructed people to disperse including Andrea Rivers, 48, of the 1800 block of South 22nd Street, who was allegedly told twice to vacate the area.

After refusing both times, she is believed to have grabbed a police officer’s right arm when he tried to arrest another woman for disorderly conduct, Tolliver said. Unable to handcuff her, he pushed Rivers away in order to keep control of the other woman. Rivers then allegedly swung a white bag at the officer striking him in the right side of his face. Inside the bag was a 30-inch wooden spindle and 20-inch wooden board, police said. The officer was unharmed.

Rivers was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, possession of an instrument of a crime, recklessly endangering another person, obstructing justice and failure to disperse.
